Rishabh Pant Steps Down as LSG Captain After Tough IPL 2026 Season

Rishabh Pant has stepped down as captain of Lucknow Super Giants with immediate effect, bringing an end to a difficult two-year leadership stint with the franchise. The decision came after LSG finished bottom of the IPL 2026 points table, a result that forced the team into a major reset.

Pant informed the franchise that he wants to shift his full attention back to batting and wicketkeeping. He reportedly told team management that leading the side while trying to rebuild his white-ball form had become increasingly difficult.

The 28-year-old is understood to have communicated his decision during the second half of the season, well before LSG’s campaign officially ended.

Pant wanted clarity, not confusion

One of the biggest reasons behind the decision appears to be frustration around decision-making inside the team setup.

Sources close to the franchise suggest Pant felt there were too many voices involved in tactical calls. With head coach Justin Langer, director of cricket Tom Moody, and assistant coach Lance Klusener all part of the leadership group, Pant reportedly felt his freedom as captain was being limited on the field.

That lack of clarity became visible through the season. LSG regularly changed combinations, and Pant himself kept moving around the batting order, from opening to batting in the middle order, without settling into one role.

Numbers that tell the story

Pant arrived at LSG before IPL 2025 for a record ₹27 crore fee, making him one of the most expensive buys in league history. But the returns never fully matched expectations.

Across two seasons as LSG captain:

  • Matches as captain: 28
  • Wins: 10
  • Losses: 18
  • Runs scored: 581
  • Strike rate: 135.74

In IPL 2025, LSG finished seventh. In IPL 2026, they dropped to tenth and ended with the wooden spoon.

Pant scored 269 runs in 2025 and improved to 312 runs this season, but neither campaign delivered the impact expected from a player of his quality.

Major rebuild likely at LSG

Pant’s exit as captain could be just the start of bigger changes at the franchise.

After LSG’s final league defeat against Punjab Kings, Moody publicly said the team needed a “leadership reset,” a comment that hinted at changes behind the scenes.

Reports also suggest Langer’s future as head coach remains uncertain, with the franchise preparing for a wider structural overhaul before IPL 2027.

Who could lead LSG next?

LSG are now expected to begin the search for a new captain ahead of next season. The strongest options already inside the squad include:

Mitchell Marsh – experienced international captain and one of LSG’s leading run-scorers this season

Aiden Markram – proven leader with experience captaining Durban’s Super Giants

Nicholas Pooran – consistent T20 performer with leadership experience across leagues

What next for Pant?

Pant is expected to continue as a player with LSG under his current contract, but his future will still be watched closely. Early trade rumours have already linked him with possible interest from Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders before the next transfer window.

For now, Pant’s focus seems clear: less leadership responsibility, more runs with the bat, and a strong push to cement his place again in India’s white-ball setup.
