Road Dogg Felt He Was Done Wrong Before WWE Departure

Brian “Road Dogg” James is speaking out about his WWE departure—and he’s making it clear it wasn’t just about a performance review.

After reports noted that Road Dogg stepped away from WWE’s SmackDown creative team in March 2026 following frustration with his performance review, he’s now addressing it directly and explaining why he chose to walk away.

Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Road Dogg pointed to WWE’s Unreal series as something that may have already hinted at what was going on behind the scenes. Despite the circumstances surrounding his departure, he made it clear that he’s not leaving bitter—but instead feels at peace with the decision.

“Have you guys seen WWE Unreal? I feel like if you watch that show, you saw what happened. I’m a happy man because of it. I have friends there that are still going to be there.”

That said, Road Dogg didn’t hold back when describing the issues he had during his final stretch with the company, admitting there were frustrations even if he understands how it might come across. He then got to the core of the problem, revealing that his role had lost meaning despite still being on payroll.

“I do have gripes—but in saying that, it sounds sh**** to say, like, ‘Oh, you’re still going to gripe about stuff there? Like why?’ I feel like I was done a little wrong. I feel like I was receiving a paycheck, but I didn’t have any purpose.”

According to him, the issue wasn’t about money—it was about influence and being able to contribute in a meaningful way. That lack of creative input ultimately pushed him toward a decision that prioritizes impact over income at this stage of his life.

“I was making a dollar, but I wasn’t making any decisions. I think I can make a difference somewhere where I might not make as many dollars. In this phase of my life, that’s what I’m thinking about.”

Bottom line — Road Dogg isn’t denying there were issues, but he’s making it clear the real problem wasn’t the paycheck—it was feeling like he didn’t matter in the room. And that’s what ultimately pushed him out the door.

Do you think Road Dogg made the right call leaving WWE, or should he have stayed and tried to work his way back into a bigger role? Drop your thoughts below.
