Road Dogg did not just leave WWE because the job stopped being fun. The WWE Hall of Famer also said the company started feeling too focused on money, and that made him want to step away.
During his appearance on Busted Open Radio, Road Dogg spoke about how his view of WWE changed before he resigned from his creative team position. He said he used to believe the booking was about wrestling, but eventually started feeling like business decisions had taken over everything.
“I think the booking used to be about wrestling, and I think the booking’s maybe always been about the money, and I just forgot. I just thought it was about the wrestling.”
Road Dogg said WWE’s current direction, at least from his perspective, felt like it was driven by money more than the wrestling itself. He pointed to money deciding things and said the situation no longer felt right to him.
“But it feels like it’s just all about the money now. So maybe that goes to what you’re saying—the money. They can go over there and make some money too, so the money’s deciding everything.”
Then Road Dogg summed up why he wanted out.
“But I don’t know, man. It just feels like WWE right now, for me, was a money grab. And I don’t know, it didn’t feel right. I wanted to step away from that.”
That came after Road Dogg already explained that he no longer felt needed in WWE and did not feel like he was earning his paycheck. He said WWE was setting records, making money, and running strong, but that success made him feel disconnected from the work.
Road Dogg also admitted that he stayed longer than he wanted because he feared unemployment and was unsure what would come next. Still, once the job stopped being fun and WWE no longer felt creatively fulfilling, he decided it was time to leave.
