Roger and Serena in US Open Mixed Doubles?

The stage is set for the greatest mixed doubles team in history at US Open… Roger Federer and Serena Williams could potentially join forces and play the US Open mixed doubles event.

Williams comeback is official with her successful return at Queens with Victoria Mboko, which only lasted one match – a win versus a seeded team – due to a Mboko knee injury suffered after in singles. Federer hasn’t announce any comeback however he is scheduled to play a Tuesday doubles exhibition before US Open and there has been plenty of talk about a Federer tour vs. various rivals, to be staged around the globe next year.

Federer is remarkably fit at age 44 (will turn 45 on August 8) and Williams looks better now at 44 than she did in her final WTA years. It’s certainly conceivable a Federer/Williams partnership could hold their own against such elite mixed teams as Vavassori/Errani and Townsend/King.

Federer and Williams faced each other at 2019 Hopman Cup where the Swiss team of Federer and Belinda Bencic defeated USA Serena and Frances Tiafoe 42 43.

In his final years on the ATP Tour, which concluded on September 23, 2022, Federer stated that he was playing for the love of the game more so than for winning and breaking more records. If Federer regains the itch to compete again after four years of inactivity, the sporting world would embrace his return to action with open arms.

Federer’s final professional circuit match was at Laver Cup, a doubles defeat with partner Rafael Nadal vs Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe.
