Roma are exploring the possibility of signing Mason Greenwood from Marseille this summer, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, with the Friedkin family potentially ready to invest heavily should the club secure Champions League qualification.

Greenwood has enjoyed an strong season in Ligue 1, contributing 26 goals and several assists across 44 appearances, and Gian Piero Gasperini has reportedly, via TuttoMercatoWeb, identified the former Manchester United forward as his primary attacking target.

Paired with Donyell Malen, who has been one of the most impactful signings in Serie A this season, Greenwood would give Roma one of the most dangerous forward lines in Italian football.

Greenwood dream signing hinges on Champions League as Soule and Kone face Roma exits

The obstacle is the price.

Greenwood is currently valued at around €50 million, and Manchester United retain a sell-on percentage from any future transfer, making a discount unlikely.

Roma’s relationship with Marseille is strong, the deal that brought Robinio Vaz to the capital is evidence of that, but the financial commitment required is significant even by the Friedkin family’s standards.

The move would only be considered if Champions League football is secured, which remains in the balance with two matches remaining. Roma’s ownership has shown a willingness to make bold signings in the past, with Paulo Dybala and Romelu Lukaku both examples of such.

Funding the move could be facilitated by departures. Both Matias Soulé and Manu Koné are understood to be among those who could leave the club this summer, with the pair having attracted interest from elsewhere and their exits potentially generating the funds needed to pursue a marquee addition.
