Rowles to Lead Junior Proteas on England Tour

The Junior Proteas will take part in a three-match Youth One-Day International (YODI) series from 30 June to 06 July before turning their attention to two four-day matches from 10 to 20 July.

Lions all-rounder Jason Rowles has been appointed captain of the touring side, which includes five uncapped players. Riley Miller (Eastern Cape Iinyathi), Nkosana Sibiya (Lions), and Joshua van Biljon (Dolphins) have all earned maiden call-ups as batters, while Easterns seamer Kamogelo Matlala and Lions all-rounder Tahseen Hanslo are also included for the first time.

SA U19 Men head coach Imraan Khan believes the blend of youth and experience will benefit the squad.

“There are five new faces in this squad, which brings a nice injection of freshness and energy to the group.

“At the same time, we’ve retained a strong core group of experienced players. That balance is deliberate; we want the new guys to be exposed to tough conditions, while also benefiting from the leadership and guidance of those who have already played at this level.

“This tour will give our players a great opportunity to test themselves in foreign conditions. The combination of red and white-ball cricket will challenge the players in different ways.

“The four-day matches will give batters time to adapt to swing and seam movement, while bowlers will have the chance to build pressure over longer spells. Since our younger players don’t often get to play first-class cricket, this will be invaluable exposure.”

The squad will assemble at the Centre of Excellence in Pretoria before departing for England on 22 June.
