Jessica Pegula did not hold back in her criticism of the four-year ban handed to Markéta Vondroušová after denying an out-of-competition anti-doping test.
The 2023 Wimbledon champion refused an anti-doping test outside of her allotted time in December 2025, citing acute stress. However, an independent tribunal upheld her ban, finding that she did not have a compelling justification for refusing the test.
Jessica Pegula Shares Thoughts on Markéta Vondroušová’s Ban
Following her straight-sets win over Darja Vidmanova in the first round of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, Pegula slammed the decision to hand Vondroušová a four-year ban over a missed test.
The American understood the need for a punishment following Vondroušová’s refusal to take the test but felt the severity of the ban made little sense.
“It’s just really unfortunate. I feel for Markéta; I don’t know the ins and outs of exactly what happened. It seems like there’s a lot of ‘he said, she said’ kind of things going on right now,” Pegula said.
Jessica Pegula also called the ruling harsh given the circumstances and felt that a better solution that does not involve ruining a player’s career has to be found.
“But I think for something like that, for four years, you’re ruining someone’s career over something that could have really just been a complete misunderstanding. I just don’t think that’s fair. I think the sentencing is so harsh… I just think there has got to be a solution where we’re not just totally destroying someone’s career over something where she didn’t even test positive,” she added.
The 27-year-old claimed that the anti-doping official arrived at her house outside of her allotted time, giving her an acute stress reaction and affecting her mental health. She also claimed that the whole experience made her fear for her safety.

Players are required to provide their whereabouts information to the ITIA so that anti-doping tests can be conducted during their allotted hour. However, tests can also be conducted outside that hour, as was the case with Vondroušová. The independent tribunal also noted that refusing a test carries the same consequences as a positive drug test.
The ban has sparked a big debate on the anti-doping rules in place for players, with the tennis community coming together in support of Vondroušová and publicly criticizing the punishment. Vondroušová is currently weighing her options before deciding whether to appeal the ban.
