Holger Rune announced his withdrawal from Wimbledon on Thursday due to the torn Achilles’ tendon that he suffered last fall in Stockholm.
Rune wrote the following on social media: “Missing Wimbledon is not an easy decision, but the long-term goal remains the same: To come back stronger and be ready to compete at the highest level. I’m getting closer every day and it’s very satisfying to feel the progress. The spirits are high – see you soon.”
The 23-year-old Dane got injured while leading Ugo Humbert 6-4, 2-2 in the Stockholm semifinals when he abruptly pulled up while running to the forehand side of his baseline. Rune’s initial plans were to come back this summer if not even during the spring for the end of the clay-court swing. However, the world No. 63 has decided to play it safer.
Carlos Alcaraz, Lorenzo Musetti, and Valentin Vacherot are also out of Wimbledon. Alcaraz has been sidelined since Barcelona with a wrist injury. Vacherot withdrew from the French Open prior to his second-round match because of a foot problem. Musetti has not played since Rome as he deals with a thigh issue.
