Ruud vs Fonseca and Rublev vs Mensik, French Open Predictions

Ruud vs Fonseca and Rublev vs Mensik, French Open Predictions

We’re into the round 4 of this intense French Open tournament where most of the top seeds are out. The two late games today on 31 May are Casper Ruud vs. Joao Fonseca and Andrey Rublev vs. Jakub Mensik and a spot in the quarterfinals are up for grabs. Let’s take a quick view at these clashes along with our betting predictions.

Casper Ruud vs. Joao Fonseca

  • Time: 20:15 local time (CEST)
  • Venue: Court Philippe-Chatrier

Ruud, a real veteran of the Paris surface, brings consistency and deep experience in Grand Slam environments. Standing across the net is the 19-year-old Fonseca, who comes from the match of his life, when he came back from 2-0 down against Djokovic.

Both of these players has been very close to going out, in several matches, but has shown extreme resilience when needed the most. Ruud looked down and out in the extreme heat already in the first round against Roman Safiullin but managed to get through the last set and followed that up with a long 5 set battle against Tommy Paul. Fonseca has come back from two sets down in the last two clashes, Prizmic and Novak. Can they manage another 5 set match today?

Predictions: The weather is finally cooling down on Sunday and that will affect play. I think for Ruud it will be much more manageable but at the same time court conditions will change to slower and Fonseca has a bit more power on most shots.

It’s tough to predict this as we never really know what we’ll get with the Brazilian. He will outhit the Norwegian at times, especially with his superb forehand, but I’m suspecting a slight letdown from him after his emotional win over Djokovic. Expect Ruud to use his heavy topspin to push Fonseca in more uncomfortable positions and in some way progress into the quarterfinal once again.

Andrey Rublev vs. Jakub Mensik

  • Time: 20:15 local time (CEST)

Mensik has, like many other players, spent a lot of time on court in the heat this week. Against Mariano Navone he battled for nearly five hours and collapsed after the match, unable to move and get up. Then he showed a lot of resilience in the comeback win against De Minaur.

Rublev, on the other hand, has won three straight-set matches without dropping a set, and should be a bit fresher than his opponent today. He also has experience of going deep in Paris.

Interestingly, Mensik leads their H2H 2-0 but they have never met on clay, both matches were on hard courts in 2024. Looking at this season, Rublev has been more consistent on clay courts.

Predictions: We’ve seen a lot of 5 set battles in Pais so far, this might be another one. Both players prefer playing from the back of the court, it will likely be decided by who can better handle the pressure of the pivotal points. I think Rublev will come out as the winner here, he’s been solid and balanced and is a better clay player.
