Carlos Sainz was not happy with how Max Verstappen overtook him at the Miami Grand Prix. The Spaniard explained his angry team radio comments about the Dutchman after the race.
After an early pit stop during the first Safety Car, Verstappen found himself at the back of the pack on a fresh set of hard tyres. The Red Bull Racing driver had to pick off the midfield cars one by one in the early stages of the race. One of the Dutchman’s move angered Sainz, who said over the team radio, “He pushed me off. He thinks he can do whatever he wants just because he’s racing the midfield!”
Sainz reacts to his radio message
Speaking to GPblog, among others, after the race, the Williams driver explained: “Yeah, no disrespect, but what we did into 17 is almost like a launch, knowing that because we’re in the midfield, we’re not going to fight him and we’re going to have to let him by at some point.”
When asked whether it was due to the frustration of having to race midfield cars, Sainz denied that was the case. “No, probably a bit of frustration of the spin and trying to get back to the front as much as possible. But yes, I mean, it’s racing. I’m not going to criticize too much. It’s just at that point it felt like we were going to crash and he took me off the track. I lost three positions,” he concluded.
In the end, it was a positive weekend for Sainz. For the second time this season, he finished inside the top ten and scored points. His teammate Alexander Albon also added a point to Williams’ tally, promoting the team to eighth in the constructors’ standings.
