GUNTHER has not been a happy camper since he lost his World Title. This week on SmackDown, the show opened up with the Ring General getting another shot.
WWE SmackDown tonight went down at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Fans were ready for the championship collision between the former champion and the American Nightmare.
This match had a big fight feel thanks to the ring introductions. The fact that Sami Zayn was a special referee also raised the stakes in a big way.
Fans had no idea how this match would turn out when Sami Zayn raised the title above his head to start the match. Cody Rhodes and GUNTHER started things out by testing each other and the special referee. The match carried on with the blue brand in a commercial-free setting.
At one point, GUNTHER and Sami Zayn had words. Then Cody Rhodes had a tiff with Zayn, and the special referee shoved him into a sleeper hold from GUNTHER. Cody was able to break the hold with the ropes, and then Zayn pulled GUNTHER off of him by grabbing him by the nose.
GUNTHER started shoving Zayn once again, and then GUNTHER took Zayn out. Cody nailed a cutter and Crossroads for the pin, but a new referee slid in just to make a two count.
Then Cody Rhodes took a powerbomb, but Sami Zayn pulled the referee out of the ring before GUNTHER could make a pinfall. GUNTHER wasn’t happy, and then Cody tried to get a pin, but GUNTHER held onto the ropes, so Sami Zayn kicked GUNTHER’s hand and then made a very fast count to help Cody retain.
This was a controversial finish. It will also likely not be the end of GUNTHER trying to get that title match. In fact, Nick Aldis came out, and he wasn’t happy. After Cody Rhodes got on the microphone, the match was restarted with a new referee.
It didn’t take long for GUNTHER to get Cody Rhodes in a sleeper hold. The match didn’t carry on much longer before Sami Zayn nailed GUNTHER with a Helluva Kick out of nowhere. Then he rocked Cody with his own title in the face before he left in a tizzy. This was quite a statement, and Sami Zayn is not a happy man in the slightest.
