San Francisco Giants vs Cincinnati Reds – April 16, 2026

The Cincinnati Reds jumped all over the Giants last night in an 8-3 win. The victory guaranteed a series win for the Reds and this afternoon they’ll try to pull off a sweep of San Francisco at Great American Ball Park to wrap up the homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 12:40pm ET.

Starting Lineups

Starting Pitchers

Chase Burns

After beginning the season with two outstanding starts Burns struggled in his last outing as he recorded just two strikeouts, walked four, and gave up five runs in 5.1 innings in a loss to the Angels. Cincinnati has scored exactly two runs in each of his three starts this season.

When it comes to the splits for Burns in his limited action in the big leagues there’s been a big difference in how lefties and righties have performed against him. Right-handed hitters have found next to no success at all. Left-handed hitters have hit quite well against him, though, showing a high average, a lot of walks, and plenty of power.

Landen Roupp

In two road starts this season Roupp has thrown six innings in each game and allowed just one earned run between the two of them. But his start at home on April 4th saw the Mets put up five earned runs against him in 4.2 innings.

In 2025 he was not nearly as good on the road where his ERA was more than two runs higher than it was at home (4.76) and hitters had an OPS of .820 against him. When it comes to platoon splits the OPS isn’t all that different, but the two groups get there a bit differently. Lefties walk more often and they make more contact, but they hit for a lower average despite that.

News and Notes

Another Emilio Pagan update

Mark Sheldon of Reds.com has the update

Closer Emilio Pagan threw a bullpen session at 9:15 am today and came out of it fine. Still a tight left hamstring but the club feels Pagan dodged a more serious injury. He’d like to pitch, if needed, today but his availability remains uncertain. #reds

Sal Stewart setting records

From OptaSTATS: Sal Stewart is the only rookie to have at least 7 HR, 17 RBI, 13 walks, 4 doubles, and 3 steals in any 18-game span as a rookie since 1920 when RBI became an official stat.

ESPN Power Rankings

There’s not much news today, especially because it’s an early afternoon game, so I figured I’d just toss this one in here for those who want to yell at someone online: ESPN’s Power Rankings have the Reds at #16. The last place Chicago Cubs at at #10, the Brewers are at #9, and the Pirates are at #8. The 10-8 St. Louis Cardinals are down at #26. And to tie it in to today’s game – San Francisco is at #27.
