Sareee is stepping away from wrestling for neck maintenance — but AEW still expects her to compete in the Women’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament.
The situation got confusing fast after Sareee was announced during this week’s AEW Dynamite as part of the Owen bracket and scheduled to face Skye Blue in the opening round.
Then one day later, Marigold announced Sareee was being pulled from an upcoming Korakuen Hall show because she’ll be taking about a month off for “neck maintenance.” That immediately sparked questions about whether she was still going to be part of AEW’s tournament at all.
Bryan Alvarez later said the belief backstage during Dynamite was still that everyone announced for the tournament would be participating. Sareee then addressed the situation herself and admitted taking the break was a hard choice.
“Honestly, it was a decision that took a lot of courage. But I was more afraid of not being able to step into the ring anymore.”
She also apologized to fans and promotions affected by the situation while explaining she’s trying to protect her future in wrestling.
“I made this decision so that I can continue fighting as a professional wrestler from here on out!”
Meanwhile, Tony Khan addressed the situation during the ROH Supercard of Honor media call and revealed Sareee’s first Owen tournament match likely won’t happen until June.
So right now, AEW still expects Sareee in the tournament — just later than originally planned while she recovers.
Do you think AEW should hold Sareee’s spot in the tournament until she returns, or should they replace her completely? Leave your thoughts and feedback in the comments below.
