Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is officially joining Nike Basketball. Below is Nike’s official statement regarding this unprecedented move.
We are thrilled to welcome Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to the Nike Basketball signature family. Coming after back-to-back MVP seasons, we are excited to build on Shai’s incredible impact with Converse as one of the most creative leaders in the game.
According to Nike representatives, the reigning MVP is set to leave Converse and join Nike, ending his successful stint with Converse. Shai shared a teaser featuring his personal Converse logo morphing into a pair of Nike Swooshes, a detail that now appears to have foreshadowed the transition.
While athlete movement between competing brands is commonplace, transfers within the same corporate family are considerably rarer. Converse operates as a subsidiary of Nike, Inc., making the switch unusual but not unprecedented. Similar moves have occurred in the past, including when Jayson Tatum transitioned from Nike Basketball to Jordan Brand in 2019 and when John Wall moved from Reebok to adidas in 2013.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander now joins LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Ja Morant, Devin Booker Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Cade Cunningham on the NBA side and Caitlin Clark, Sabrina Ionescu, and A’ja Wilson on the WNBA side as signature athletes. 2026 NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brunson is not a signature athlete, but rather the face of Kobe Brand.
This could be potentially tied to Converse being sold off in the near future as the brand continues to struggle. Further details are coming, so stay tuned for updates.
