Shoulder update and ‘car crash’ prediction for May 2

On May 2, at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, Gilberto Ramirez vs David Benavidez (31-0, 25 KOs) headlines a PBC Pay-Per-View event available on Prime Video and DAZN PPV for Ramirez’s WBO/WBA cruiserweight title.

Ahead of this exciting unification match-up, Ramirez spoke to Dan Rafael on the Big Fight Weekend podcast about recovering from shoulder surgery and his upcoming showdown with Benavidez.

Gilberto Ramirez vs David Benavidez set for May 2 clash

Ramirez (48-1, 30 KOs) was last seen in action defeating Dorticos before undergoing surgery. Leading up to that fight, Ramirez had won three consecutive bouts since his only career defeat to the great Dmitry Bivol.

When asked by Dan Rafael how he’s feeling now, the unified WBO/WBA cruiserweight champion said:

“It was really bad at that time, my shoulder. And right now, it’s 100%. I feel like I’ve really recovered, and I fought with what felt like one arm in that fight. But I mean, it was a great fight, great performance, and now it’s time to put on a great show on May 2.”

Rafael asked “Zurdo” about his previous sparring sessions with Benavidez and if those spars had any bearing on the outcome on May 2:

“It doesn’t mean anything because it passed already all the sparring, all the sessions we did, all the hard work. We grew up as fighters, and now we have May 2, and only one thing matters: to win this fight and become the new face of boxing,” said Ramirez.

Earlier in the interview, Ramirez mentioned he sees this fight being like a “car crash,” and when asked to expand on that, he said: “Oh, because the session of sparring that we did before, and that was like a pay-per-view sparring session. Now, it’d be a pay-per-view fight and be a super good fight, and that’s why I need people to see this fight on May 2.”
