Skye Blue Reveals Adam Copeland Helped Her Through Scary Injury Recovery

Skye Blue had no idea what she was in for when a serious injury forced her into surgery, but Adam Copeland helped prepare her for the brutal reality of recovery.

During her appearance on Close Up with Renee Paquette, the AEW star talked about being sidelined with an injury that required surgery. Skye admitted she had broken bones before, but this one was on another level. She was scared, and at first, she wanted no part of going under the knife.

Renee brought up that Skye had spoken with Adam Copeland during her recovery, and Skye explained that she was terrified because she had never dealt with an injury that serious.

“So, I had never broken — I mean, I had broken bones, but I never broken one to the degree I needed surgery and I was terrified. Like I did not want to do it. I was like, ‘No, we can cast it.’ And they’re like, ‘No, it’s detached. Skye, sit down.’”

That is when Kyle Fletcher suggested reaching out to Copeland, who had dealt with a similar type of injury. Copeland did not give Skye some sugarcoated speech. Instead, he told her exactly what she could expect after surgery and during the mental grind that comes with being taken out of action.

Skye said Copeland walked her through the ugly parts of recovery, from waking up after surgery to dealing with metal in her body.

“And so Kyle had mentioned, he was like, ‘What if we just ask?’ Because he’s had a similar break. And he called and he was just like, ‘This is what’s going to happen. It’s going to suck at first,’ right? And he kind of explained like what you’re going to feel like when you wake up from surgery, what it’s going to feel like having metal in your body.”

Skye also opened up about what it actually feels like now, saying the metal in her body is still something she notices.

“There’s some days I can feel where the plate starts and ends. It’s crazy. But it’s like I think it’s cuz it’s still so fresh, too. But like when it gets cold, it hurts and it cracks and it pops and it does all weird things.”

Copeland also warned her about the emotional side of recovery. Skye said he told her she might not even want to watch wrestling while she was stuck healing.

“But he was very descriptive and was like, ‘It’s going to suck and you’re not going to want to watch wrestling. You’re not going to want anything to do with it.’ And it’s going to be hard not to scroll and not to doom scroll because that’s our life. You went from 100 to zero.”

That advice ended up helping Skye more than she expected. She said Copeland also got her into reading, which became a major escape while she was recovering and trying not to stay glued to her phone.

Skye explained that she did not think reading would actually help her until she tried it.

“And then he was actually who got me into reading. And I thought it was crazy. He was like, ‘You’re going to want to read.’ I was like, ‘What?’ Like, ‘There’s no — cuz I didn’t even read the books in school. I would like skim through them, do the homework, and call it a day.’ I was like, ‘There’s no way. You’re kidding.’ He’s like, ‘It’s going to help.’”

Skye said she eventually gave it a shot after struggling with doom-scrolling during recovery.

“And I would remember doom scrolling when it was getting really bad. And I was like so mad at my phone because I couldn’t — I would put it down and then I would still end up going through it and looking at something. And then Kyle had gotten me a Kindle and I decided to download a book and I started reading and I finished it like that and I was like, ‘Oh, this is cool.’”

Skye Blue clearly had a tough road back, and it was not just about waiting for her body to heal. Surgery, metal in her body, frustration, and the mental drop from being active to being stuck in recovery all played a part. Adam Copeland’s advice gave her a real look at what was coming, and it helped her find something outside wrestling to get through it.

Skye is back doing what she loves now, but this story shows how much went into that comeback behind the scenes.
