Son Of Packers Legend Comes Up Big In Historic USMNT World Cup Win

There is Green Bay Packers DNA in the United States’ 2-0 victory over Australia in a FIFA World Cup match on Friday at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington.

United States forward Alex Freeman scored the final goal of the match in the 43rd minute with a header that slipped past Australia goalkeeper Patrick Beach.

The goal was reviewed before getting confirmed, sparking a wild celebration by the more than 66,000 fans in attendance.

With that victory, the USMNT has accomplished something it had not done since before the Second World War.

“The #USMNT has won two straight FIFA World Cup matches for the second time and the first since their first two all-time matches in the competition in 1930,” OptaJack shared in a social media post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Freeman is the son of a Packers legend

The 21-year-old Freeman is also the son of former Green Bay wide receiver Antonio Freeman, who helped the team win the Super Bowl XXXI in 1997. Antonio is perhaps best remembered for one play, as he scored an 81-yard touchdown reception off a pass from Brett Favre in the aforementioned edit

This time, it’s Alex who’s making highlights for the family.

“For me, it just shows how great the family tree is,” Freeman said after the win over Australia, via Jeff Carlisle of ESPN. “He can be great, but I can be great in my own way as well. I think that just shows how amazing it is to have a dad who’s successful and that can mentor me to be able to be ready for moments like these.”
