Steelers strategically adjust as training camp approaches

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to refine their roster ahead of the 2026 NFL season, with a series of transactions in June emphasizing depth and competition. Under General Manager Omar Khan and new head coach Mike McCarthy, these moves reflect a methodical approach to building a competitive roster as training camp approaches.

Recent Roster Transactions

The Steelers recently executed two targeted additions. On June 16, the team signed linebacker Jacoby Windmon, bringing back a familiar face for depth in the linebacker group. The day before, Pittsburgh signed wide receiver Levi Wentz, a Pittsburgh-area native.

Wentz originally signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent following the 2026 NFL Draft. He appeared in 12 games for Kansas in 2025 after transferring from Albany.

These transactions focused primarily on wide receiver and linebacker depth, providing coaches with additional bodies to evaluate during training camp.

Drew Allar remains unsigned

Third-round quarterback Drew Allar is the only 2026 Steelers draft pick who remains unsigned, which could impact his ability to report to training camp.

Per Bob Labriola of Steelers.com, “Usually, draft picks sign rather quickly, but this one could be different because Allar is a quarterback, and whatever contract he signs as a rookie in 2026 cannot be adjusted upward until the 2028 offseason.” A rookie is not permitted to participate in camp until an NFL contract has been signed.

While mid-round quarterbacks often do not immediately sign offers, there is no indication that talks are not underway. The team has been working on Allar’s development and the young QB participated in all of the voluntary workouts and OTAs

“In my opinion, it would be the height of short-sightedness for Allar to miss any training camp,” Labriola stated. A signing may be right around the corner.

Training Camp preparations and schedule released

With offseason programs complete, attention now turns fully to Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, the site of the Steelers’ 59th training camp. Players are scheduled to report on Tuesday, July 28, with the first public practice set for Wednesday, July 29 at 11 a.m.

The Steelers released key dates on the camp schedule. Monday, August 3 is expected to be the first day with the full pads on. The annual night practice at Latrobe Memorial Stadium will be on Saturday, August 8 at 6 p.m. (time subject to change.)

Intense competition along the offensive line, in the secondary, and at skill positions are expected as the team transitions to McCarthy’s physical scheme. These camp practices will be critical for determining final roster spots and evaluating how recent additions integrate with the core group. Fans can look forward to strong defensive play and an offense built for physicality under the new coaching staff.

Stay tuned as the 90-man roster takes shape and the preseason approaches. The grind in Latrobe will set the tone for what promises to be an intriguing 2026 campaign.
