Cleveland Guardians ‘ Opening Day starter Tanner Bibee set a franchise record on Monday, but not one that he wants to be known for.
He got roughed up, raising his ERA to 4.57 ERA and is still in search of his first win of the season.
Before his start, the 27-year-old had never given up more than four home runs in a game.
Against the Washington Nationals on Monday, he gave up five home runs, tying a franchise record that was previously set by Gary Bell (1962) and Louie Tiant (1969).
Tanner Bibee’s winless streak continues
Bibee’s 2026 season has gotten off to quite a rocky start. It’s been filled with a continuous lack of run support that has had him remain winless (0-6) despite owning a respectable 3.75 ERA before his disastrous start against the Nationals.
The Guardians have a strong starting rotation with Parker Messick (6-1, 2.24 ERA), Gavin Williams (7-3, 3.25 ERA), Joey Cantillo (4-1, 3.05 ERA) and Slade Cecconi (3-5, 5.18 ERA). Bibee has pitched well this season, but the bad luck with his historically low run support has caught up with him.
Bibee was dinged early in the game, with seven earned runs while giving up eight hits and striking out three across three innings, and threw 61 pitches.
The five home runs that Bibee gave up were in the span of 13 batters. Overall, marking his start as one of the shortest and roughest of his career.
One of the home runs was by young rising star James Wood, who continues to rake. The other home runs were crushed by Louis Garcia, C.J. Abrams, and two from Curtis Mead. The Nationals ended up taking down the Guardians with a final score of 10-2.
