Tarik Skubal’s injury leaves Tigers with two potential trade targets

The Detroit Tigers’ aspirations took a massive hit when superstar hurler Tarik Skubal suffered an elbow injury.

The two-time American League Cy Young award winner will miss some time after undergoing surgery, leaving a massive hole in the Tigers’ rotation.

Considering that, MLB insider Mark Feinsand believes they will be active in the trade market.

In his latest column, he pointed to the struggling Boston Red Sox and New York Mets as two logical trade partners for A.J. Hinch’s team.

Detroit Tigers could trade for Sonny Gray or Freddy Peralta after Tarik Skubal injury

The Red Sox just fired manager Alex Cora, and since they’re sitting at the bottom spot in the AL East, they might shop Sonny Gray.

“If Boston ultimately becomes a seller, Sonny Gray could become trade bait come July. The Red Sox are off to a disappointing start, though even entering Monday at 13-21, Boston was only three games back in the AL Wild Card race; in fact, no team in the AL was more than 3 1/2 games out of a playoff spot with three-quarters of the season still to be played,” Feinsand wrote.

As for the Mets, they’ve doubled down on their commitment to manager Carlos Mendoza. Then again, they could still look to shed some money off their payroll if they continue to struggle.

“If the Mets continue to falter, Freddy Peralta — a free agent at the end of the season — could be an interesting option. The same goes for Clay Holmes, who has a $12 million player option for 2027 that he will likely decline based on the way his season is trending,” continued Feinsand.

Whatever the case, the Tigers must find someone to fill in for their perennial All-Star.

The Tigers are sitting on an 18-18 record and tied for the top spot in the AL Central, so they can’t afford to cede ground after losing their best player.
