The Houston Texans agreed to a three-year extension with linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair on Wednesday, a league source said. Financial terms of the deal are not yet known.
The 29-year-old was going into the final year of a three-year contract he signed in free agency with the Texans in 2024.
Al-Shaair has established himself as a physical presence on a Texans defense that was one of the best in the NFL in 2025. Houston ranked No. 3 in the league in defensive EPA, No. 3 in turnovers forced and No. 2 in points allowed. Houston allowed just 93.7 rushing yards per game, in which Al-Shaair played a major role. He had 103 tackles and two interceptions in 16 games and was named to his first Pro Bowl.
Al-Shaair entered the league in 2019 as an undrafted free agent out of Florida Atlantic. He spent the first four years of his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers. In 2023, Al-Shaair signed a one-year deal with the Tennessee Titans, where he set a career-high 163 tackles. He turned that season into his initial three-year deal with the Texans, which was set to expire following the 2026 season. With the new deal, Al-Shaair is locked into Houston through the 2029 season.
Al-Shaair has also been active off the field through his charitable work, earning him the Texans’ 2025 nomination for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award.
The Texans have been busy this offseason. Earlier this month, they made defensive end Will Anderson Jr. the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.
