The Most Dangerous Time of the Year for Pitchers

Spring training is right around the corner, and with it comes a good time to refresh on the importance of ramp-up and arm health. Here shortly, you will be staring at a calendar filled with bullpens, practices, and live innings. Every year, that rush back into competitive throwing is where a lot of arms get exposed, and it’s no coincidence that so many injuries show up early in the season.

 

Most arm injuries aren’t freak accidents. They’re usually the result of an arm that wasn’t given enough time to adapt to what it’s being asked to do. Intensity ramps up fast in the spring. Velocity ticks up, volume stacks quickly, and recovery windows shrink. The problem is that tissues don’t adapt at the same speed as motivation or adrenaline. When intent jumps ahead of the workload the arm has earned, something eventually gives.

 

Many players believe they’re ready because they trained hard in the off-season. They lifted, stayed active, and threw just enough to feel decent. That’s a good start, but feeling good and being prepared are not the same thing. Spring training has a way of pulling back the curtain. More frequent throwing, higher effort, and less margin for error expose whether an arm was truly built up or just maintained.

 

What happens early in the year is rarely caused by spring training itself; it simply reveals what wasn’t addressed beforehand. Incomplete throwing progressions, rushed timelines, and a lack of gradual buildup show up fast once competition starts. The arm doesn’t care that it’s February or March; it only responds to the stress it’s been conditioned to handle.

 

With spring approaching, the priority shouldn’t be rushing to immediately be on a mound. It should be making sure the arm is progressively prepared for what’s coming. Building volume before intensity, respecting recovery, and allowing time for adaptation are what keep players on the field when the season starts. Early availability sets the tone for everything that follows, and the arms that last are almost always the ones that took the ramp-up seriously.
