Domestic cricketer Tiaan van Vuuren offered fans a rare look into the realities of life in professional cricket when he joined the latest episode of CFM Weekly to discuss his journey, challenges and ambitions in the South African game.
Van Vuuren spoke openly about the path that led him from school cricket into the professional ranks, highlighting the importance of patience, resilience and belief in one’s abilities. He explained that representing South Africa at the U19 level was a major turning point in his career, reinforcing his belief that cricket could become more than just a passion.
“When I made the SA U19 side, that was a big step for me. Soon after that came my first franchise contract, and that’s when it really hit me that this dream could actually become a reality,” he said.
Like many domestic cricketers, Van Vuuren has had to adapt to new environments and overcome setbacks along the way. Moving between franchises and adjusting to different playing conditions tested both his technical skills and mental strength. He described the journey as one filled with highs and lows, emphasising that persistence is key to long-term success.
“Every career has its ups and downs. The key is to keep believing in yourself and trust the process, even when things don’t go your way,” he added.
A major part of his development came through exposure at national-level training environments and involvement in professional squads, where he had the opportunity to learn from experienced players and coaches. Those experiences helped him understand the small details that separate good players from elite performers.
“You realise there’s so much more to the game, and you learn how different players prepare and think. That exposure really helps you grow as a cricketer,” he explained.
Despite already achieving significant milestones, van Vuuren made it clear that his ambitions remain firmly focused on representing South Africa at the highest level. However, he stressed that reaching the Proteas would only be the beginning of a bigger mission.
“Every cricketer dreams of playing for the Proteas, but it’s not just about getting there. It’s about performing and winning matches for South Africa,” he said.
The full conversation on CFM Weekly provides valuable insight into the mindset and journey of a modern domestic cricketer, offering fans and aspiring players a deeper understanding of the dedication required to succeed in South African cricket.
