Frances Tiafoe won an all-American matchup in the Terra Wortmann Open final on Sunday, beating Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4. Tiafoe triumphed in just one hour and seven minutes for the first ATP 500 title of his career.
The 28-year-old has now won four titles overall and two on grass (previously Stuttgart in 2023). He has lost eight finals, including three at the 500 level and a Masters 1000 (Cincinnati 2024).
“I’ve lost a lot of 500 finals; I’ve lost a lot of finals in my career,” Tiafoe reflected. “This is big. I just want to say one of my favorite scriptures: The pain that you’re feeling does not compare to the joy that is coming. Obviously, that has been proven very true.
“A couple of weeks ago, I had one of the toughest losses of my career at the French Open (a five-setter against Matteo Arnaldi in round four), and to come back and have a good week in Stuttgart and win here for my biggest title, beating the players I did, it’s a huge testimony to that quote. It’s something I’ve been living by.”
At the HSBC Championships, Francisco Cerundolo clinched the title with a 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3 victory over Tommy Paul. The two finalists played a whopping three hours and two minutes of grass-court tennis on Sunday at Queen’s Club.
It is the fifth ATP title of Cerundolo’s career and second this season, having previously emerged victorious in Buenos Aires. All four of his previous triumphs had come at the ATP 250 level; this one was a 500. It is the Argentine’s second success on grass after winning the Eastbourne event in 2023. Paul had been on a nine-match winning streak at Queen’s Club, having lifted the trophy in 2024 before missing the tournament last summer due to injury.
“I can’t believe it,” Cerundolo said. “I fought really hard during the whole week. Every match was a war, and I think I got the reward. Winning this title for me is unbelievable — coming from Argentina and winning Queen’s, such a historic event on grass. I never imagined I’d lift this trophy.”
