The WWE Women’s United States Championship was on the line at Night of Champions as Tiffany Stratton defended her title against Jade Cargill. The match came after weeks of tension between two of SmackDown’s biggest stars.
Their rivalry continued to escalate after Cargill pinned Stratton in a tag team match on SmackDown. The following week, the two crossed paths again during the Queen of the Ring tournament before Cargill sent another message by picking up Stratton’s championship after a post-match brawl.
With the bad blood continuing to grow, Stratton agreed to put the Women’s United States Championship on the line at Night of Champions. The title match gave Cargill a chance to add another championship to her résumé while Stratton looked to prove she could keep the gold around her waist.
Tiffany Stratton had fans in her corner for this match, and Jade Cargill had a lot of heat on her from the capacity crowd. Cargill and Stratton traded moves early on, but neither of them could get a pinfall.
At one point, Tiffany Stratton went for the Prettiest Moonsault Ever, but Jade Cargill got her knees up. Then B-Fab and Michin tried to get involved, but Chelsea Green appeared from underneath the ring to take them out. She got distracted by the title, and then Jade grabbed her, which caused the title to get in the ring. Jade threw Chelsea into the corner and stalked her, but the referee backed her off. Then Jade went for the title, but Charlotte Flair swiped it from her, nailed Jade with the belt, and Tiffany hit her finisher to retain the championship.
