The Tigers (20-26), like the Blue Jays, have struggled on the offensive side of the ball to open the 2026 regular season. The Tigers have 187 runs, compared to the Blue Jays’ 184, and both teams have hit 41 home runs, tied for 21st in MLB.
Blue Jays’ center fielder Daulton Varsho came through with the game-winning RBI for the second time this week, driving home Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with an RBI single in the top of the 10th inning. The 29-year-old has started to heat up since the calendar flipped to May, batting .288 with one home run and six RBIs through 14 games played.
Riley Greene is a player to keep an eye on in the Tigers’ lineup. The 25-year-old is currently riding an 11-game hit streak, which has helped push his season average to .327, the fifth-highest mark in Major League Baseball. Greene has hit four home runs across his first 165 at-bats this season and is coming off a season where he totalled 36 long balls.
The Tigers will hand the ball to Jack Flaherty during Sunday’s series finale. The 30-year-old has struggled through his first nine starts of 2026, pitching to a 0-4 record, a 5.73 ERA and 1.73 WHIP. Flaherty has given up 36 hits and 29 walks across 37 2/3 innings pitched, giving the Blue Jays’ offence a chance to put some runs on the board.
The Blue Jays will counter with Kevin Gausman. Gausman is coming off his worst start of the season, an outing against the Tampa Bay Rays in which he picked up the loss and turned in a line of 4.2 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 5 K.
For the season, Gausman boasts a record of 2-3 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. After the Blue Jays used six relievers to get through Saturday’s bullpen day, Gausman will be tasked with giving the club some length, as some relievers may be unavailable after yesterday’s usage.
