Roberto De Zerbi will attempt to pull Tottenham Hotspur out of the Premier League relegation zone when he takes charge of the club for the first time, against Sunderland on Sunday afternoon.

The Italian was appointed as the Lilywhites’ head coach earlier this month, following the departure of interim boss Igor Tudor after a disastrous spell in north London.

De Zerbi – who previously managed Brighton and Hove Albion and, more recently, Marseille – arrives in the capital with Spurs currently sitting 18th in the top flight table, following West Ham United’s win over 20th-placed Wolves on Friday.

Ahead of their visit to The Stadium of Light, it has emerged that Spurs have reached an agreement to sign an experienced defender this summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham have reached a verbal agreement to sign defender Andy Robertson when he leaves Liverpool at the end of the season.

It was announced this week that the Scot would depart Anfield this summer after almost a decade on Merseyside.

The left-back has played more than 370 times for Liverpool during his time with the club, and won several trophies including two Premier League titles and the Champions League.

His playing time has decreased somewhat over the past 18 months, though, and the Scotland international is now set to leave Liverpool when his contract comes to an end in June.

Romano claims that Spurs have agreed to sign the player, however the deal has not yet been signed as Robertson will only agree to join De Zerbi’s side if they avoid relegation to the Championship.

It is suggested that the Scottish left-back will join Spurs and be part of De Zerbi’s squad for next season if they can avoid the drop.
