The Kansas City Chiefs, or at least their players, care about more than just football. QB Patrick Mahomes owns a minority share of the Kansas City Royals after his father’s lengthy MLB career. One other Chiefs players is following in Mahomes’ footsteps by dabbling in the business side of the MLB.
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is joining the ownership group for the Cleveland Guardians as a minority investor per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Kelce grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio and rooted for the Guardians in his youth. Now he is a minority owner for his childhood team.
The Guardians are currently valued at $1.7 billion.
Kelce shared that he has plenty of fond memories rooting for Cleveland’s MLB team during the 1990s.
“There was nothing like Cleveland baseball in the ’90s,” Kelce said. “That’s just a core memory for me. Kenny Lofton, Carlos Baerga, Jim Thome, Sandy Alomar Jr., the list goes on, and I admire how they just continue to pour into this city and this game. It’s something that resonates with me, giving back to the places and the people that gave so much to you.”
Kelce seemingly praised Kansas City’s ownership group, claiming he’s been around great owners throughout his professional career.
“I’ve been lucky enough to have a front-row seat to good ownership in my career, and I know the best teams prioritize culture,” Kelce added. “Everyone is there to play their role, and right now, I’m here to observe and learn and really to support the team and the city when and where I can.”
Kelce joins several other professional athletes in purchasing minority stakes in MLB teams. Other prominent athletes include LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Cade Cunningham.
