Volkov (40-11 MMA) most previously competed in the Octagon this past October at UFC 321, where he scored a split decision victory over Jailton Almeida. Prior to that triumph, ‘Drago’ was coming off a split decision setback to Ciryl Gane at UFC 310.
Meanwhile, Waldo Cortes-Acosta (17-3 MMA) will enter tonight’s contest on a three-fight winning streak, with his latest victory coming by way of second-round TKO over Derrick Lewis. Prior to that, ‘Salsa Boy’ was coming off back-to-back knockout wins over Shamil Gaziev and Ante Delija.

Round one of this heavyweight matchup begins and Alexander Volkov gets to work with some low kicks. Waldo Cortes-Acosta lands a nice jab. More low kicks from ‘Drago’. He throws one to the body. Acosta is looking to find a way inside. Volkov keeps him at bay with a high kick and then a low kick. Another nice inside low kick from the Russian. He lands two more. ‘Salsa Boy’ charges forward with a 1-2. Alexander Volkov avoids and circles off the cage. Two more low kicks from Volkov. Waldo Cortes-Acosta returns fire with one of his own. He loads up on a right hand, but if fails to connect. ‘Drago’ with another nice body kick. Acosta answers with a jab. Big shots from both men. Acosta with another 1-2. Volkov ends the round with one last low kick.
Round two of this UFC 328 main card heavyweight contest begins and Alexander Volkov starts things off with a low kick. Waldo Cortes-Acosta replies with a nice counter right. He lands another. Volkov goes to the body with a jab. He continues to chip away at Acosta’s lead leg with low kicks. Acosta with a right hand. He leaps in with a left hook that misses the mark. A body kick and then a low kick from ‘Drago’. Waldo Cortes-Acosta replies with a 1-2. Now a good right hand. Alexander Volkov with a good punch and ‘Salsa Boy’ is rocked. He backs up and Volkov comes forward with a right. Acosta appears to have recovered and leaps in with a 1-2. Volkov answers with a high kick that partially connects. Now a low kick from the former Bellator champion. He continues his momentum with a body kick and then a jab. A hard inside low kick from Volkov lands flush to close out round two.

The third and final round begins and Waldo Cortes-Acosta comes out quickly and lands a 1-2. Alexander Volkov answers with a body kick. The heavyweights trade low kicks. ‘Salsa Boy’ with a right hand over the top and then a stiff jab. An accidental eye pokes causes a brief pause in the action. We restart and Acosta connects with three big punches. He continues to get off some good punches. Volkov is bleeding from his nose. He lands a low kick, but he continues to back up this round. Waldo Cortes-Acosta with a double jab. Volkov with another low kick. He lands another. Acosta charges in with a flurry, but ‘Drago’ avoids and circles out. Another flurry and this time he lands a pair of good shots. The horn sounds to end the fight.
