URC club defend hiring former All Black as three ex-players step down over appointment

A historical allegation has emerged against Roger Randle after he was unveiled as Munster’s new attack coach earlier this week

Munster have defended their decision to appoint former All Black Roger Randle as their new attack coach despite a backlash over historic allegations.

The United Rugby Championship outfit unveiled Randle as Mike Prendergast’s replacement this week, with the 51-year-old in line to work with Clayton McMillan once again.

The pair previously worked together at the Chiefs.

However, his appointment has caused a stir in Limerick.

According to the Irish Independent, three independent members of Munster’s Professional Game Board have reportedly stepped down because of Randle’s appointment.

According to the report, former players Billy Holland, Mick O’Driscoll and Killian Keane have objected to the appointment and were unhappy with the process to replace Prendergast.

Munster have confirmed the departure of the trio.

Randle, who played two uncapped games for the All Blacks, joined the Chiefs coaching staff seven years ago.

However, historical allegations from a tour in South Africa, while he was with the Hurricanes in 1997, have surfaced since his appointment.

Randle has always maintained his innocence, with the case having been dropped at the time.

“Munster Rugby is aware of a historical matter concerning newly appointed coach Roger Randle, from 1997,” said a statement from Munster.

“At the time, no legal process was pursued, and the matter was closed.

“Munster Rugby carried out due diligence during this recruitment process and are satisfied with the appointment, which has been ratified and approved.”

According to the Irish Independent, the Irish Rugby Football Union have seemingly distanced themselves from the matter – saying the appointment of assistant coaches is down to the provinces themselves.
