USMNT’s learns knockout stage path as Round of 32 determined

The U.S. Men’s National Team’s knockout stage path at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is now determined following the conclusion of group stage play on Saturday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were already guaranteed to face Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Round of 32, which will take place on Wednesday in San Francisco, California. The Americans sealed top spot in Group D after victories over Paraguay and Australia before falling to Turkey in a dead-rubber finale on Thursday.

It will mark the first head-to-head meeting between the USMNT and Bosnia-Herzegovina since December 2021.

Should the Americans advance to the Round of 16, they will meet either Belgium or Senegal in Seattle on July 6. It would be the third-ever World Cup showdown between the United States and Belgium, with the last coming in 2014 where Tim Howard made a tournament record 15 saves in a 2-1 extra time defeat.

If the Americans reach the quarterfinal round, they could meet either Portugal, Croatia, Austria or Spain. Portugal takes on Croatia in Toronto on July 2 while Spain faces Austria in Los Angeles on the same day.

Among the other teams on the USMNT’s side of the bracket are Morocco, Netherlands, France, Germany, and CONCACAF rivals Canada.

Reigning champions Argentina, Group L winners England, and Group B winners Brazil are among the nations on the other side of the bracket. In addition, co-hosts Mexico could also be a potential opponent for the Americans, should both teams run the table and reach the final at New York/New Jersey Stadium on July 19.

Uruguay, Scotland, South Korea, Iran and Turkey were among the teams already eliminated from the tournament after failing to advance out of the group stage.

The USMNT are 1-8-0 all-time in the knockout stage of the World Cup and will seek to improve that record, starting on Wednesday against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
