USWNT rebounds with feisty win over Brazil

The U.S. women’s national team closed out its two-match Brazil trip with a bounce-back victory on Tuesday night. 

A Sophia Wilson shot turned own goal gave the Americans a 1-0 road result in Fortaleza, The match ended in a frenzy with four Brazilian players and four coaches all being ejected in stoppage time.

The USWNT had the better offensive looks in the first half with Wilson, Emma Sears, and Michelle Cooper all being denied by Brazil’s Lorena. 

Following a goal-less first half, Wilson’s deflected shot off of Isabela Chagas in the 63rd minute proved to be the deciding goal. It also marked Wilson’s second goal involvement since returning to international duty as she raced into the box and forced a dangerous shot which Brazil couldn’t keep out. 

Brazil failed to record a single shot on target and frustration eventually boiled over before the final whistle. 

Bia Zaneratto was ejected in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time after earning a second yellow card before Tarciane was sent off for elbowing Wilson in the dying stages of the match. Kerolin and Ludmila were also shown red cards before the match’s conclusion, summing up a disappointing evening for the hosts. 

Brazil coach Arthur Elias and three of his assistants were also shown red for their actions towards the refereeing crew.

As for the USWNT, they rebounded from Saturday’s 2-1 loss in Sao Paulo, which marked their second defeat of 2026. 

Goalkeeper Claudia Dickey registered her eighth clean sheet and 11th win as a USWNT starter after being forced into zero saves on the night. 

The USWNT will begin their World Cup Qualifiers later this year as part of the CONCACAF W Championship.
