Warzone Is Shutting Down on PS4 and Xbox One This Year

Call of Duty’s popular free-to-play battle royale, Warzone, will stop working on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later in 2026. Activision confirmed the shutdown on May 28 as part of a larger blog post announcing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.

Why Is Warzone Leaving Last-Gen Consoles?

Modern Warfare 4 is the first Call of Duty game in years to skip PS4 and Xbox One entirely. The game launches October 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. As it has with previous titles, Activision plans to integrate MW4 with Warzone shortly after launch. Because MW4 will not run on last-gen hardware, Warzone on those platforms has no path forward.

The Shutdown Happens in Phases

Activision is not pulling the plug all at once. The process runs across three stages:

  • Phase 1: Starting June 4, Warzone will no longer be available for new downloads on PS4 and Xbox One. Players who already have it installed can keep playing until MW4 Season 1 begins.
  • Phase 2: On June 25, the in-game store for Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will close. Purchases like Call of Duty Points bundles will no longer be available on those platforms. Players can still progress through free Battle Pass tiers to unlock weapons for Black Ops 7 seasons.
  • Phase 3: After Season 1 of Modern Warfare 4 begins, Warzone will no longer be playable on PS4 and Xbox One. Season 1 is set to launch shortly after the game’s October 23 release date.

What Happens to Your Progress?

Players do not lose everything when the shutdown hits. Progression from PS4 and Xbox One will carry over to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, or PC, as long as you play on the same linked Activision account.

Players who still have a Call of Duty Points balance when the game closes can also keep it. Since the currency is tied to the Activision account rather than the console, it will still be there when they move to a new platform.

Activision confirmed on its support site that all other Call of Duty games will remain playable online on PS4 and Xbox One. Only Warzone is affected.

MW4 Will Bring New Content Into Warzone

When MW4 Season 1 begins, Warzone will integrate Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression as part of a connected experience between the two titles. This is how every major Call of Duty release has worked for the past several years.

MW4 launches October 23 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. An open beta is planned ahead of launch.

PS4 and Xbox One Are Now Nearly 13 Years Old

Both consoles launched in late 2013. Supporting Warzone on hardware that is nearly 13 years old has likely created technical constraints for the development team. The timing still puts some players in a tough spot. Console prices have gone up considerably over the past year. A PS5 in 2026 costs more than it ever did before, which means some players still on PS4 or Xbox One may not be in a position to upgrade.
