West Ham fans vent frustration as survival hopes take a blow after defeat to Brentford

West Ham fans vent frustration as their side’s survival hopes take a blow after a 3-0 defeat to Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo said to BBC Match of the Day: “I stand here honest and trying to speak to you about what I saw. Brentford is a very good team but the way we react and play the first half, hitting the post, having a goal disallowed for a tight margin, it gives us hope at half-time. But the penalty hurts us and after that is becomes an old situation with the rush.

“But it’s up to us how we react from a tough loss today. [The penalty] it hurt us, it goes against what we wanted in the half-time talk. It’s unfortunate we conceded from a penalty, it could be avoided.

“It’s up to us how we will react from the situation and noise. Let’s stick together. We have three games to go. It will go down to the wire, the last game. We have to stick together.”

West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen to Sky Sports: “Really disappointing. All the goals were poor on our behalf and could’ve been stopped. We had chances, hit the post twice, bar and post again. We had a goal disallowed too. There were a couple of decisions that didn’t go our way.

“You have to react in the right way. It’s going to hurt today because like I said we had good opportunities. But what we have to do now is focus on the next games. We have three games left and every one is a cup final.

“There’s so much on the line. We can’t let the last few weeks go away because of this result today. On another day we would have got the win today. We’ve done a lot of good things.

“Everyone has to stick together, as cliche as it sounds. We’ve got a really good group. It’s down to the senior players to stand up. We can’t dwell on this. We have to move forward because there’s no other way.”

Brentford manager Keith Andrews said to BBC Match of the Day: “We haven’t had what we’ve deserved but that’s the game. Today I wanted us to keep the performance but find a way to win. I thought it was a terrific win today.

“We caused them a lot of problems. The problems they caused us were from our own doing. I thought there was more of an edge to our play in the second half.”

On being in the race for Europe: “It’s tight, obviously. The fact we’ve stayed in that position even though we’ve drawn loads of games…we’ve had a special season so far and I want us to continue that. We’ll just keep pushing.”

On Josh Dasilva’s return: “I got quite emotional when I was looking at his introduction into the game. It’s a special moment for the club, he works so hard. He epitomises the club really. It was a special moment to see him back on the pitch.

Brentford goalscorer Nathan Collins to BBC Match of the Day: “It’s a better feeling than a draw. It’s been coming, our performances have been there.

“They [West Ham] were good. First half we didn’t play our best but we stuck in it. We showed our quality in the second half.”

On Josh Dasilva’s return: “Josh is one of a kind. You don’t get many players like him anymore. What he’s gone through, I hope nobody experiences what he’s gone through. He deserves every moment he gets.

“This club is built on progressing everyone. That’s what is special. It’s not about one player specifically, it’s about progressing the whole club. At the start of the season we had a lot of set backs and people leaving, but we brought new faces in. This club is all about bouncing back.”

Mikkel Damsgaard to Sky Sports: “We scored our chances and closed out the game. It was a good one.

“We knew it would be tough. We’re fighting for Europe. We’re saying it’s on. We need to get some points from the last three games and see where it takes us. We’ve just improved so much this season.”

On Josh Dasilva’s return: “He’s such a good person and he means a lot to the group. He’s massive outside the pitch and he helps the team get better. He’s a massive player for us.”
