The Knights did a lot of things right during their series in Durham against the Bulls (24-39). The Knights swept Durham, and they are now within 3.5 games of first place in the International League East. Charlotte’s run differential is +92, which leads the entire International League.
Outfielder Braden Montgomery, 23, won his first Knight of the Week award. Montgomery got promoted to Triple-A on May 5, and it did not take long before he started making a positive impact. This week, Montgomery went 10-for-22 with a homer, a double, seven walks, and eight RBIs. Montgomery’s three-run homer on Friday was an enormous moment during a 4-3 victory that helped the Knights preserve their undefeated record for the week. That resulted in a 1.217 OPS to raise his season OPS to .970 across 27 games in Double-A and 29 games in Triple-A. Montgomery’s bat and ability to play center field make him an excellent prospect and a strong candidate for a promotion. Montgomery is still quite young, but he is clearing every hurdle on his road to the majors.
Honorable mention goes to starting pitcher Hagen Smith, who opposing hitters could not solve. Smith only allowed one run in nine innings, and incredibly, he collected 18 strikeouts. Smith, 22, made two starts, and he finished with nine strikeouts in each of them despite being removed in the fifth inning both times. This excellent week lowered Smith’s season ERA from 4.42 to 3.78.

The Barons stumbled in Knoxville against the Smokies (30-26), dropping four of six to fall to 21-35 overall.
Despite losing the series, the Barons had some impressive performances, and pitcher Dylan Cumming played a large role in one of Birmingham’s victories. On Wednesday, Cumming pitched six shutout innings, only allowing four hits. The Barons proceeded to win that game by a score of 2-0, so they needed Cumming to be on top of his game to steal that one. The Smokies scored a total of 41 runs (6.83 per game), so they gave the Barons pitching staff many problems overall. As a result, Cumming’s excellent start allowed him to stand out quite a bit from the crowd.

The Dash won three consecutive low-scoring games to open the series, but they struggled to prevent runs over the weekend. As a result, the Dash settled for a series split against the Spartanburgers (28-28).
Incredibly, Caleb Bonemer went four weeks without a Dash of the Week award. However, Bonemer, 20, returned to familiar territory this week, going 6-for-23 with two homers, a triple, three doubles, two walks, and a stolen base in his only attempt. Many pitchers have been overly cautious with Bonemer in recent weeks, and it is difficult to blame them. Bonemer did get some opportunities against the Spartanburgers, and he took advantage. Bonemer’s big week boosted his OPS back up to .996, putting him on the verge of returning above the 1.000 mark, where he spent much of the season.

The Cannon Ballers split a competitive series in Hickory against the Crawdads (31-24) to remain a game better than .500. Hickory is tied for first place in the close division of the Carolina League South, and Kannapolis trails them by three games.
Outfielder James Taussig, 23, continued his hot streak at the plate. After winning his first SSS award last week, Taussig kept the good times rolling. Taussig went 7-for-20 with three homers, a double, two walks, eight RBIs, and a stolen base in his only attempt. Taussig has boosted his season slash line to .250/.370/.545, as he has been a very tough customer for pitchers.

Yordani Soto, 17, only played in three games, but he made his time on the field count. Soto, who is primarily a shortstop, went 4-for-7 with a homer, a double, and a walk. Soto led the team in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage among players with at least five at-bats. Overall, Soto is slashing .250/.324/.531 in 22 games, and he is off to a fast start to his career. This is Soto’s second Complex Sox Player of the Week award in the past three weeks.

The DSL White Sox got off to a mediocre start, winning two of five with a -11 run differential during their first week of the season. The team put 39 runs on the board (7.8 per game), but unfortunately, they allowed 50 (10.0 per game).
Infielder Carlos Vielma, 16, was on fire during his first week as a professional. Vielma, whose playing time was pretty evenly split at second base and third base, went 10-for-17 with two triples, three doubles, and five walks. That resulted in a 1.682 OPS that comfortably led the team. The season opener was Vielma’s debut, and incredibly, he went 3-for-5 with two triples in that game.
