Emma Raducanu’s long-awaited return to the WTA Tour has ended in disappointment.
Diane Parry, the world number 94, defeated Raducanu 6-4, 7-6 in the French city of Strasbourg, setting up a clash with China’s Shuai Zhang in the second round.
It was a valiant effort from Raducanu, who twice broke Parry when the French player was serving for the match.
What did you make of Emma Raducanu’s first performance back on clay?
Her first match in 72 days…
Although the loss will certainly come as a disappointment for the British star, she should take great pride in her performance after enduring an extended period on the sidelines.
Simply put, critics of Raducanu’s latest result will do well to remember what the Briton has overcome in the last two months.
Emma Raducanu should not worry about her latest loss
Before making her return in Strasbourg, Emma Raducanu had been dealing with the effects of a viral illness for the best part of three months.
The British star was forced to miss many high-profile WTA events as a result, including WTA 1000 tournaments in Miami, Madrid and Rome.
Remarkably, Tuesday’s contest against Diane Parry represented Raducanu’s first on the WTA Tour since March 8, when she lost to Amanda Anisimova in the Indian Wells third round.

For Raducanu, Tuesday’s match represented a chance for the British star to build her clay-court confidence ahead of Roland Garros.
Of course, the result matters, and Raducanu will be bitterly disappointed not to have advanced in the French city.
However, one should take the time to acknowledge that this is Raducanu’s first match back from illness. She needs to be given the time to develop her confidence on the clay, instead of being ‘thrown to the lions’ at the first sign of trouble.
Do you think Emma Raducanu has made a good decision with this hire?
Could you see her winning another Grand Slam title alongside Andrew Richardson?
The British star, who recently re-hired coach Andrew Richardson, also showed many positive signs throughout the match. She fought superbly in the second set, demonstrating the grit and desire of an elite WTA player when breaking Parry’s serve twice [when she was serving for the match].
Raducanu will now turn her attention towards Roland Garros, where she has the opportunity to significantly boost her ranking.

When will Roland Garros take place?
This year, the main draws of the French Open singles events will begin on May 24 and run until June 7.
Coco Gauff is the defending champion on the women’s side: the American defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the 2025 final.
Carlos Alcaraz is the men’s champion. The Spaniard, a two-time defending champion in Paris, will be unable to defend his title this year after suffering a long-term wrist injury.

The singles’ champions at this year’s tournament will each take home €2.8m [£2.44m] – an increase of 9.8 per cent compared to last year.
Alcaraz and Gauff both took home €2,550,000 respectively after winning last year’s singles events.
