Why Ferrari star Charles Leclerc hopes his kids stay away from motorsport

Charles Leclerc may be one of Formula 1’s biggest stars, but when it comes to the idea of a future son following in his footsteps, the Ferrari driver admits he would rather see him choose a different path.

Motorsport has shaped Charles Leclerc’s life from an early age, helping him achieve his dream of reaching Formula 1 and racing for Ferrari. However, the Monegasque driver believes that watching someone you care deeply about compete on the track can be far more stressful than being behind the wheel yourself.

During a recent conversation, Charles Leclerc was asked whether he would like to see a future son become a racing driver. His answer was immediate and honest.

“No, it’s better if not! I won’t be the one to decide, but if I had to choose, I’d like him to do something else. Watching my younger brother, Arthur, compete is already a pain. I don’t dare imagine a son…”

The comment highlights a side of Formula 1 that fans rarely consider. While drivers are accustomed to managing pressure, risk and intense competition throughout their careers, the experience of watching a family member race can be a completely different challenge.

The 28-year-old has often been seen supporting his younger brother Arthur Leclerc, who continues to build his own career in motorsport. Yet despite understanding the demands of racing better than most people, the Ferrari driver admits that sitting on the sidelines can be an uncomfortable experience.

For many professional drivers, the danger associated with motorsport becomes something they learn to accept. Family members, however, experience race weekends from a different perspective, often dealing with anxiety and uncertainty while having no control over what happens on track.

Charles Leclerc’s remarks also underline the strong bond he shares with Arthur. The two brothers have supported each other throughout their careers, and Charles has frequently spoken about the pride he feels when watching Arthur develop as a racing driver. At the same time, that emotional connection makes every race more nerve-racking.

While Charles Leclerc made it clear that any future child would ultimately be free to make their own choices, his preference is understandable. Having experienced both the rewards and pressures of motorsport at the highest level, he knows better than anyone how demanding a racing career can be.

For now, the Ferrari driver remains focused on his own ambitions in Formula 1. But if the day comes when he finds himself watching a son line up on a starting grid, Charles Leclerc has already admitted that it may prove even more stressful than competing in a Grand Prix himself.
