Will Conditional Pick Terms Be Made Available More Moving Forward

Should the NHL force teams to make the conditions of trade picks known right away?

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet joined Sirius XM NHL Network Radio on Wednesday morning with Gord Stellick and Scott Laughlin. There, he was asked about draft picks in trades being less valued. Friedman wonders if the conditions of the picks should be known right away.

Gord Stellick: “But anyway, about Brad Treliving? You mentioned that name. I don’t want to pile on the schmozzle that’s Toronto right now in a lot of ways, but, but we talked earlier that this propensity for teams in general to devalue late first round picks and be readily include them in trade deadline deals to trades in general, kind of like what the NFL started years ago, putting a value on a pick.

Do you think they’re going to revisit that a little bit? And you also think they’re going to revisit a vote, making it top five, only top five excluded, or top 10 excluded, because you expected you were going to make the playoffs. Do you think this kind of schmozzle is going to cause general managers a little more pause for thought moving forward?”

Elliotte Friedman: “I think it’s going to make you fight more for more protection. Like, I don’t know. Actually, it’s interesting. Gordy, one thing the tanking is so bad in the NBA right now that they’re talking about solutions for that. And one of the things they’re kind of talking about right now, I think it’s more of a brainstorm than anything close to actual real policy, but they’re talking about a limit on how much or how often you can trade first-rounders. That’s one of the possibilities, ideas, and solutions being thrown around.

I just think for like, I think right now there’s a lot of self policing from the managers. Like, in this particular case, Toronto decided to take that risk because they wanted to get that deal done, and it could bite them.

But I don’t, like, I don’t think that this is something the league needs to regulate or moderate. I think it’s simply that you have to decide what you’re comfortable doing in a trade. And the amazing, the one thing I don’t like, I’ll say this, is that I think if there are conditional picks, they have to be clear what they are like.

NHL Rumors: Alex Ovechkin Only Knows His Future in the NHL

The thing that happened with Florida and Chicago, where it turned out we didn’t know for a year that Florida had top-10 protection on this year’s pick. First of all, I hate that I didn’t realize that. I admit I’m partially annoyed myself, but I just think that, like if you look, I went back to the releases from the Blackhawks and Panthers when that trade was made, and there was nothing there saying that. I think it should be clear at the time that these are the conditions on the picks.”
