Yoane Wissa setback but light at the end of the tunnel

Yoane Wissa lined up in the starting eleven for DR Congo against Colombia.

The Newcastle United striker the hero in the opening game for his country, as he scored DR Congo’s first ever goal at a World Cup finals and secured a deserved 1-1 draw against a stunned Portugal side.

In the early hours of Wednesday (UK time) DR Congo up against Colombia in Guadalajara.

Colombia dominating the match but DR Congo digging in and restricting the opposition to very few clear chances.

Yoane Wissa not getting much. if any, service up front but they looked like they were heading for another excellent point.

Then disaster on 76 minutes when a heavily deflected Munoz shot gave Colombia the lead.

DR Congo tried to respond but couldn’t find an equaliser.

Yoane Wissa playing the full match and whilst this 1-0 defeat is a setback for the Newcastle United striker and his international teammates, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

The early hours of Sunday (UK time) see DR Congo up against Uzbekistan who were hammered 5-0 by Portugal yesterday.

A victory for Yoane Wissa and DR Congo would put them on four points and effectively guarantee progress to the knockout stages. The good thing is that the only faint hope Uzbekistan has of qualifying is by winning, so they won’t be sitting back and playing for a draw. So hopefully DR Congo can exploit that and win the match, to continue their 2026 World Cup journey.
