Jannik Sinner cruised to a commanding 6-1, 6-2 win over Alexander Zverev in the Madrid Open final, winning his fifth ATP Masters 1000 title in a row. Despite the milestone, the Italian did not have his parents in attendance, later opening up about his mother’s frequent absence from tournaments and his desire to spend more time with his family.
Why Jannik Sinner Wants More Time with His Parents
During his post-match press conference, Sinner acknowledged the difficult sacrifice his parents made by allowing him to leave home at 13 to train in a different city.
“I consider myself very lucky because when I was 13, I made a choice to leave home and go to a center to practice. This for parents is very difficult, but especially for a mother, to accept that in a way. Leaving home. It was tough for me, but it was for sure more tough for parents because they also would like to see the kid growing up. I missed out a little bit time, spending time with my parents and I would like to catch up as much as I can,” Sinner said.
Although the Italian made an emotional admission about wanting more time with his family, he also empathized with his mother, Siglinde, who wanted to stay home and care for his grandparents rather than travel to tournaments.
“Obviously at home, my grandma and grandpa, the parents of my mom, they’re still both alive and so I understand her very much that she wants to stay at home and spend as much time as possible with them,” he added. “But I also would like to have more time with family.”

Given his longing for family presence, Sinner also expressed admiration for Carlos Alcaraz’s support system, as the Spaniard is always accompanied by his father and his elder brother, Alvaro. The 24-year-old pointed out that not spending enough time with loved ones could lead to regrets.
“And it’s great to see Carlos, for example, you know, traveling with family and brother. And I think he’s doing very well because when somebody’s not there anymore, then you regret it. So hopefully I can have some more time with my parents and the people I love and also with my brother and friends and because things can change. She’s definitely a role model and I’m very happy to have my mom and my dad. They are a true inspiration for me. I just try to be a little bit like them because then I know I’m a good person,” he said.

While Jannik Sinner’s parents were absent from the Madrid Open, they are expected to join him at the Italian Open in Rome, as they did last year. They were also in attendance to witness the world No. 1’s triumph over Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo Masters final last month, along with his girlfriend, Laila Hasanovic.
