The remarkable rise of the electric France and Bordeaux Bègles winger
To say that Louis Bielle-Biarrey exploded onto the scene would be an understatement.
Since making his senior debut in January 2022, the 22-year-old has proved himself to be a bona fide try-scoring machine.
As well as being the highest scorer in the history of his club, Union Bordeaux Bègles, he’s topped the touchdown charts in the last two Six Nations championships. He also averages more than a try per game in a France jersey.
He’s undoubtedly one of the hottest talents in world rugby, a player whose electric pace, fancy footwork and try-scoring instincts make him pure box office. So, as UBB prepare for a Champions Cup final and a chance to retain the trophy they won last year, here are 10 things you should know about Louis Bielle-Biarrey.
10 things you should know about Louis Bielle-Biarrey
- Louis Bielle-Biarrey was born in La Tronche, not far from Grenoble in south-east France, on 19 June, 2003.
- His first experience of rugby was with local amateur club Rugby Club de Seyssins. He played as a fly-half but switched to a back-three role when he joined Grenoble, aged 13, in 2016.
- He made his France under-20 debut against Italy in the 2021 Six Nations. He played three times for Les Bleuets in the tournament, subsequently joining Union Bordeaux Bègles on a two-year academy contract.
- Scarlets fans will remember Bielle-Biarrey’s senior debut for Bordeaux. Aged just 18, he scored a hat-trick in a Champions Cup match in January 2022, and was named player of the match. Club bosses still believed he wasn’t ready for the travails of the Top 14, however. “On his first outings, we felt he was a player who wasn’t necessarily very comfortable in the tackle,” then-coach Frederic Charrier told French regional newspaper Sud Ouest. (He’s still far from the biggest back-three player you’ll see, standing 1.84m tall and tipping the scales at 83kg, according to the UBB website.)
- Having been called up for France’s extended training squad for the 2023 Six Nations, Bielle-Biarrey made his senior debut in a World Cup warm-up against Scotland at Murrayfield that August. Unsurprisingly, he scored a try in his side’s 25-21 defeat
- Soon after, Fabien Galthié selected Bielle-Biarrey for the France World Cup squad. Having only just turned 20, he became the youngest player Les Bleus have ever selected for the tournament.
- In October 2025, a touchdown in the Top 14 match against Lyon made Bielle-Biarrey the highest try scorer in the history of Union Bordeaux Bègles. It took him just 77 matches to surpass the club record of 46 tries set by Australian star Blair Connor.
- Louis Bielle-Biarrey scored eight tries in the 2025 Six Nations, a record he broke the following year with the nine he touched down in 2026. He’s the only player ever to score tries in 10 consecutive Six Nations matches and, against England in 2026, became just the second player in history (after Chris Ashton) to cross the line four times in a single Six Nations match. He was voted Six Nations player of the championship in both 2025 and 2026.
- His current international strike rate stands at 29 tries in 27 Tests for France. That’s one try behind Philippe Sella, though the legendary French centre earned his tally over 111 matches.
- Bielle-Biarrey has already scored against all of the Nations Championship teams except for South Africa and Fiji. He’ll get the chance to complete the set later this year, with Les Bleus set to host both sides in November.
