Green Bay Packers Legend Reveals Why Tyrod Taylor Is The Perfect Backup To Jordan Love

Earlier this week, the Green Bay Packers surprised many by signing free agent Tyrod Taylor to be their backup quarterback. After Malik Willis signed with the Miami Dolphins in free agency, Green Bay had a need at the quarterback position. Jordan Love, of course, is the starter and will be for years to come. However, Willis proved to be invaluable as a backup, and there were serious questions regarding the quality of the other quarterbacks the Packers had on their roster.

Taylor is entering his age 37 season and 16th season in the league. He is a former Pro Bowler that has spent the majority of his career as a backup, and the Packers obviously thought he was their best option to serve in that role in 2026.

Green Bay Packers legend John Kuhn believes Tyrod Taylor is the perfect backup to Jordan Love

October 29, 2023; East Rutherford, NJ, USA; New York Giants quarterback Tyrod Taylor (2) looks for an open teammate.

Not too long ago, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst stated his desire for the Packers to turn into a quarterback factory, much like they were when Brett Favre was entrenched under center. At that time, many of his backups went on to become Pro Bowlers with other teams.

Willis, of course, was not drafted by Green Bay, but they certainly developed him into a potential starting quarterback. Instead of finding another project to backup Love, though, the Packers decided to sign Taylor.

John Kuhn, a team Hall of Famer, stated why on his podcast with Packers insider Matt Schneidman.

“He’s that guy that lifts (Love) up,” he explained. “He’s that guy that bounces ideas off of him. He’s the guy that, on the sideline, Jordan misses a throw and says, ‘What did you see on that?’ He looks at this with 16 years of experience and says, ‘Check out the safety rotation and the corner starting to backpedal right at the snap of the ball. This is when you want to focus your attention to the other side and bullet the ball here.’

“I think this is great. It’s going to bring a lot of experience to the room. It’s going to bring a lot of character into that room.”

At this point, the Packers are trying to win a Super Bowl, and having a veteran who can serve as an extra set of seasoned eyes helping Love continue to master various aspects of his game is a great deal more beneficial to them at the moment than developing another quarterback behind him.
