iXS Carve 1.0 MIPS Helmet – Half-Shell Helmet for Trail Riders

iXS Carve 1.0 MIPS Helmet – Half-Shell Helmet for Trail Riders
With roots in motocross, iXS bring a serious dose of protection know-how to the trails. The Carve 1.0 MIPS clearly prioritises safety features, comfort, and smart details over flashy showmanship. But how well does this protection package actually perform in normal eMTB use?

What does the iXS Carve 1.0 MIPS Promise?

iXS stays true to its DNA with the Carve 1.0 MIPS: maximum protection, cleanly integrated and without unnecessary bulk. In most helmets, the inner EPS core of the helmet sits directly against the hard outer shell. iXS add an additional layer of reinforcement, which is embedded inside the EPS core. It’s designed to increase the structural integrity of the helmet, while also helping to dissipate stress through a larger amount of the EPS core material, not just the area that has been directly impacted. In theory, it allows them to produce a lighter weight helmet that achieves a higher level of protection, without the need for a large amount of EPS material.

The helmet also uses the MIPS Air Node padding system, which is designed to reduce rotational forces during a crash, without compromising airflow while riding. That’s a clear advantage on an eMTB, where long climbs and sweaty transfers are part of everyday riding: having plenty of ventilation really helps keep your focus on the trail ahead.

Energy absorption systems such as MIPS are now used by almost every helmet brand. In the Carve 1.0, iXS relies on MIPS Air Node pads.

The iXS Carve 1.0 MIPS features their 360° ErgoFit adjustment system, which completely encloses the head. The fit can be fine-tuned steplessly using a dial at the back of the head, and the rear strap and retention system can be adjusted between three different positions to get the right height for your head.

The extended rear section of the iXS helmet gives the back of the head added protection.

The extended rear section of the shell adds extra protection, while the front features a practical sunglasses dock. Rounding out the package is the FIDLOCK SNAP magnetic buckle, which allows for quick, secure one-handed fastening.

The helmet visor can be set to three positions, though the lowest setting is the standard one – and definitely the coolest-looking, too.

In conventional in-mould helmets, the shell and EPS core sit directly against each other. In this transition zone, an impact can create complex stresses. That is exactly where the Head Guard comes in. This patented reinforcement system is built directly into the EPS foam. It spreads impact energy across a larger area and increases the shell’s tensile strength without adding any extra weight. The result is a helmet that is lighter than it looks and stronger than it feels.

Easy-to-use FIDLOCK magnetic buckles are pretty much standard on helmets at this price range. We love it!

How Does the iXS Carve 1.0 MIPS Perform on the Trail?

We’ve been testing the iXS Carve 1.0 MIPS extensively since autumn – it’s been on adventures to Brixen in Italy for the DI.A, survived our eMTB group test in Spain, and it has endured high mileage on our home trails around Stuttgart.

In real-world testing, the iXS Carve 1.0 MIPS impressed us with high comfort and a very secure fit. The helmet sits snugly on the head, without creating pressure points, and it stays reliably in place even on rough trails. There’s plenty of room for glasses or goggles, and they don’t get knocked out of place or pushed down your nose while bouncing down technical descents. The eyewear dock keeps your glasses safely firmly in place, with the arms tucked inside the shell of the helmet. We couldn’t feel any contact or pressure from the glasses while they were stored here.

Anyone who likes to take off their glasses on sweaty climbs will love the eyewear dock on the iXS Carve 1.0 MIPS.

Parking spot for your glasses: thanks to the cutouts inside the helmet, the arms never touch your head – your glasses stay locked in place, even on rough descents.

Ventilation is clearly one of the Carve 1.0 MIPS’s strengths. Even on sweaty climbs, your head stays pleasantly cool. On colder days, depending on your hair situation, the airflow can actually be so effective that a thin skull cap underneath starts to make sense.

At 457 g in size M, the Carve 1.0 MIPS is no featherweight, but thanks to its excellent fit, that extra weight barely registers on the trail. Quite the opposite: subjectively, the helmet feels stable and very reassuring – and when you feel safe, you’ll feel more relaxed and in control.

Conclusion on the iXS Carve 1.0 MIPS

The iXS Carve 1.0 MIPS isn’t a helmet for weight weenies, but it makes a clear design statement, and stands out with well-thought-out tech and smart details like the eyewear dock. Its excellent fit, high comfort, and strong ventilation make for a whole lot of fun on the trail. The protection package, made up of the patented Head Guard system and MIPS Air Node, adds an extra sense of confidence when riding.
