June 2026 sees the biggest sporting competition on the planet kick off at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. With the USA, Mexico, and Canada acting as co-hosts, the FIFA World Cup is set to captivate fans around the world. Bigger than ever, with 48 teams contesting 104 games over five weeks of action, according to NewBettingSites, this is one of the world’s most popular betting events.
From the moment the tournament kicks off through to the final at MetLife Stadium on 19 July, there will be no escaping the FIFA World Cup. Predicted to attract around 6 billion viewers across all platforms, it seems safe to assume that the tournament may grab the attention of the stars of the WWE. But, if taking a break from the ring to catch the latest game, who will the WWE giants be cheering for?
Cody Rhodes – Team USA
The joint hosts certainly won’t be short of support among the wrestlers on the WWE roster, but who else to select as the honorary fan of Team USA than current undisputed champion, Cody Rhodes? The US squad could certainly do with a dose of Rhodes’ winning mentality as they bid to make it beyond the Last 16 for the first time since 2002.
Drew McIntyre – Team Scotland
Drew McIntyre’s recent bid for the title may have ended in disappointment, but he at least has the World Cup to look forward to. As a lifelong Rangers fan, Drew has a passion for the beautiful game and will join the Tartan Army in cheering for Scotland at their first World Cup Finals since 1998.
Gunther – Team Austria
Another WWE star with a known love of football, Gunther may have inherited his interest from his mother, who played and coached the game. Before perfecting the folding powerbomb, Gunther put his formidable frame to use as a goalkeeper in his youth. Paired in Group J alongside defending champions Argentina, Austria will also be making their first finals appearance since 1998.
Ludwig Kaiser – Team Germany
Gunther and his closest ally don’t disagree on too many things, but they don’t share a footballing allegiance. Expressing support for German clubs Hamburger SV and Hannover 96 in the past, Ludwig will have high hopes that Germany can claim the trophy for a fifth time.
Asuka – Team Japan
Former figure skater Asuka has reported interests in gaming and graphic design. However, if she is a closet football fan, she will be delighted to see the land of her birth at the finals. A draw alongside the Netherlands and Sweden looks tough, but the highly regarded Japanese side may cause a shock or two.
Rhea Ripley – Team Australia
An all-round sporting phenom, Rhea Ripley played Aussie Rules Football, rugby, and football (soccer) in her homeland – even lining up for semi-professional outfit Fulham United FC. As ever, the Socceroos start among the outsiders but will at least hope to escape Group D alongside the USA.
Sami Zayn – Team Canada
Having been spotted wearing the black and white stripes of Newcastle United in the St. James’s Park crowd, it seems that Zayn has more than a passing interest in football. Making only their third appearance at the finals, the Maple Leafs will hope to use home advantage to escape the Group stage for the first time.
Rey Mysterio – Team Mexico
Having previously weighed on the Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo debate – favouring the Portuguese hitman – the masked marvel has a known interest in football. Luckily for him, his home nation of Mexico earns an automatic qualifying spot as hosts. The most successful of the host nations to date, having reached the quarter finals in 1970 and 1986, Mexico start as favourites to top Group A.
Thursday 11 June is the date in the diary for the opening game of the 2026 World Cup. Will any of the above stars be celebrating after the final on 19 July? Let us know in the comment’s below.
