The ATP tour heads to Hamburg in the last week before the French Open. Francisco Cerundolo will be in first-round action against Alex de Minaur, while Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will take on Corentin Moutet.

One of the benefits of ATP 500 events is the absence of the first-found bye, which means we are treated to good matches right out of the gate. In this case, it works against No. 3 seed Alex de Minaur, who drew unseeded world No. 27 Francisco Cerundolo from Argentina at the Hamburg Open on Monday.

This is a dangerous match for de Minaur. Clay is his least successful surface and he has been limping along on European clay for the past month, with opening-round losses in both Madrid and Rome. Cerundolo is an accomplished clay-courter; he hasn’t necessarily been at his best this spring, but I still give him the nod in this one.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina vs. Corentin Moutet

Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has had a less successful season in 2026 than he did last year. He skipped Monte-Carlo entirely after he lost his first match in Miami — a bit of surprising move since he was defending semifinal points from 2025. He won one match each in Madrid and Rome.

Davidovich Fokina’s Monday opponent is Corentin Moutet from France, who is well known for his on-court behavior. Moutet is ranked 32nd in the world, but he has had a poor first half of the season. ADF won their only other meeting last year on the hard courts of Canada. The surface favors Davidovich Fokina — and with Moutet off the boil, I’m expecting the Spaniard to advance.
