French Open 2026 Day Nine Recap

French Open 2026 Day Nine Recap

Day nine at Roland Garros delivered another five-set marathon, and there’s no doubt the men’s draw has completely opened up in Paris.

Matteo Berrettini continued his impressive comeback from years of injury frustration by ending Juan Manuel Cerundolo’s giant-killing run, while Felix Auger-Aliassime produced the kind of composed straight-sets performance (not something he often does) expected from the highest seed left in the top half.

Flavio Cobolli survived a late scare against surprise package Zachary Svajda to continue Italy’s remarkable fortnight, but the match of the day belonged to Matteo Arnaldi and Frances Tiafoe, who produced a five-hour, 26-minute classic under the lights on Chatrier.

The result means Italy now has three men in the Roland Garros quarter-finals for the first time ever, and while this half of the draw might look weak for a Grand Slam, these guys are fighting tooth and nail to take advantage of it.

Flavio Cobolli def. Zachary Svajda 6-2, 6-3, 6-7(3), 7-6(5)

Flavio Cobolli reached the Roland Garros quarter-finals for the first time in his career, but not before surviving a dramatic late scare against American surprise package Zachary Svajda.

For two and a half sets, Cobolli looked completely in control on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The Italian dominated with his forehand, blasting 57 winners overall, including an impressive 41 from that wing alone, while repeatedly overpowering Svajda from the baseline.

The American, who had previously stunned Francisco Cerundolo earlier in the tournament, struggled badly early on and found himself overwhelmed by Cobolli’s intensity and depth. The Italian raced into a two-set lead and appeared to be cruising after moving 5-1 ahead in the fourth set.

Svajda suddenly began swinging freely, taking bigger risks and forcing Cobolli deeper behind the baseline. The American clawed one break back, then another, reeling off five straight games as the Italian visibly tightened while trying to close out the win.

Cobolli eventually steadied himself. Halting the collapse with a delicate drop-shot winner before edging through a tense fourth-set tie-break to seal victory.

Cobolli is just one in a crop of Italian talent right now, and I make him the favourite to make the final from this side of the draw.

Highlights

Matteo Berrettini def. Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-3, 7-6(2), 7-6(6)

Matteo Berrettini continued his comeback to the latter stages of the Majors, ending the run of Juan Manuel Cerundolo to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final since 2022.

Cerundolo arrived full of confidence after stunning Jannik Sinner and surviving a near six-hour marathon against Martin Landaluce, but Berrettini’s power and serving proved too much over three tight sets.

The Italian was dominant behind his first delivery throughout the match, winning 84 per cent of first-serve points and repeatedly bailing himself out of pressure moments with big serving. Even when Cerundolo grabbed an early break in the third set, Berrettini stayed composed and quickly wrestled control back.

Cerundolo competed well from the baseline and forced two tie-breaks, but Berrettini was the sharper of the two, and JMC looked to have a leg issue, which is no surprise given the hours he’s spent on court.

After saving two match points earlier in the tournament against Francisco Comesana, Berrettini suddenly finds himself arguably the most experienced player left in the top half of the draw, and the victory marks a big milestone in the Italian’s long road back from injury problems that have derailed the past few seasons of his career.

It doesn’t seem that long ago that he was pretty much competing in any event he entered, but over the last two years, he’s been in one tournament then out injured the next. Irrespective of what happens here, can he roll into the Grass Court season, where he used to excel, with this kind of form?

Félix Auger-Aliassime def. Alejandro Tabilo 6-3, 7-5, 6-1

Felix Auger-Aliassime continued his under-the-radar progress in Paris, brushing aside Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets to reach his first Roland Garros quarter-final.

After surviving several difficult moments earlier in the tournament, Auger-Aliassime produced his cleanest performance so far in Paris, controlling the match from the baseline and never allowing Tabilo to settle into any rhythm.

The Canadians’ serving remained solid throughout, which made the difference, and while Tabilo stayed competitive, he’s not a particularly big threat on European Clay.

Felix is now the highest seed remaining in the top half of the draw, and his first straight-sets victory of the tournament should stand him in good stead in the second week.

Next up is a quarter-final against fellow form player Flavio Cobolli. I think Cobolli can win that, as he can use his explosive, type-game to draw errors out of FAA, who is still too leaky from the baseline.

Highlights

Matteo Arnaldi def. Frances Tiafoe 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4

Matteo Arnaldi produced one of the comebacks of the tournament to stun Frances Tiafoe in a five-hour, 26-minute epic and reach the first Grand Slam quarter-final of his career.

For long stretches, it looked like Tiafoe was in complete control. The American surged into a double-break lead in the fourth set and stood just two points away from victory multiple times as he closed in on back-to-back Roland Garros quarter-finals. But Arnaldi didn’t give up.

The Italian clawed back one break, then another, forcing a fourth-set tie-break where the momentum finally shifted completely. Once Arnaldi escaped into a deciding set, Tiafoe’s level dipped physically and mentally as the Italian continued to extend rallies and force the American into playing one extra shot over and over again.

Arnaldi somehow scrambled balls back into play from impossible positions, facing 25 break points across the match and saving 17 of them, repeatedly being on the brink before finally breaking Tiafoe twice in the deciding set to complete the turnaround.

For Tiafoe, it was a brutal defeat after being so close to the last eight, especially with that 4-1 lead. The American played some excellent attacking tennis for much of the match, but Arnaldi’s defence was just next level, check that rally where he’s scrambling, eventually drawing an overhead error from Tiafoe.

Arnaldi’s route to the quarter-finals has been super physical. The Italian has now spent more than 17 and a half hours on court in Paris, the most time spent reaching a Grand Slam quarter-final, and I can’t remember the last time a Slam had so many five-set matches.
