This is the Motion Motorsport Report for InsideTrackNews.com for June 24, 2026 featuring updates and commentary from the Canadian and International racing scenes.
The reversal of the pit road speeding penalties applied to Pierre Gasly has resulted in protests from other teams. McLaren stated, correctly, that “Throughout the Monaco Grand Prix weekend – and in every event – all teams operated according to the regulations and established standard practices for what concerns the speed limit in the pit lane as they were applied at the time. Competitors adjusted their procedures accordingly and, where required, accepted and served penalties imposed under those regulations.
In our view, the subsequent removal of penalties creates a situation in which some competitors are disadvantaged by having acted in accordance with the rules and the Stewards’ decisions. Such an outcome risks creating sporting inequity and undermining confidence in the consistent application of the FIA Sporting Regulations.” More to come!!

Discussions have been hot and heavy about NASCAR racing at the San Diego Naval Base. My only concern was the easily moved retaining walls. They caused problems in all three races. Steel pegs to secure them, maybe? Having said that, I must say that it was a cool facility to host three neat races. And about leaving the O’Reilly drivers IN their cars for a VERY hot 45 minutes? O Really? Letting them return to pit road was not an option, where they could get out of their cars?
In 1988 Linda and I won a Ford Dealer Contest trip to the Super Bowl in San Diego. Part of the entertainment included a concert at an arena, with Frank Sinatra and Liza Minnelli singing in a boxing ring. Awesome performance. We were also taken out to a hangar at the Naval Base where there was a reception party and meal.
In the middle of the hangar was the ‘Spirit of America’ sailboat racer. We had to climb a bunch of steps to look inside. The keel was completely covered so, of course, I had to ask one of the crew guys why it was hidden. The guy explained that the keel is the secret to its speed, and it is a tightly kept secret regarding its design. He said that competing teams actually send scuba divers down to film the keels.

NASCAR Cup Series – In what was not a shocker, Shane Van Gisbergen (Chev) won the pole for Sunday’s race at the San Diego Naval Base over Carson Hocevar (Chev) and Ryan Blaney (Ford). 39 cars – 18 Chevs, 10 Fords and 11 Toyotas. On lap 2 Austin Dillon got spun after getting hit but got it refired. No caution. On lap 6 Jimmie Johnson swapped ends in the chicane, hitting the wall, but also kept going.
On lap 12 Ricky Stenhouse came to a stop on track. Caution. On lap 19 Bubba Wallace lost a wheel on track and was penalized two laps. Blaney won Stage 1. Lap 30 saw Brent Crews roll to a stop on track. Yellow. On lap 32 it looked like SVG misjudged his closing speed and center-punched Austin Hill, who then took out Connor Zilisch. SVG and Zilisch were out. Ryan Preece won Stage 2.
The green came out for the restart and almost immediately it was yellow for debris on the track. I loved the commentator’s quote – “it could be from any of the cars”!! On lap 61 the caution came back out for oil from the Stenhouse car.
Things ran smoothly after that and Corey Heim got the win over Wallace, who fought back from two laps down, and Kyle Larson.

In the points Tyler Reddick (who started from the back) leads Hamlin by only 8 and Blaney by 133.
Next race – Sonoma, Sunday at 3.30 P.M. on TSN 5.

NASCAR O’Reilly Series – Brent Crews (Toyota) picked up the pole for the race Saturday on the military base in San Diego over Parker Retzlaff and Anthony Alfredo (both in Chevs). Canadian Alex Labbe qualified 12th. 37 cars – 30 Chevs, 7 Toyotas and NO Fords.
Strange things can happen when racing on street courses, and a really strange thing happened on the very first lap. Corey Day had a manhole cover pop up and land in his grille, cutting some lines. It was interesting to see at least five NASCAR officials looking on as the crew performed repairs.

After 4 yellow laps the red flag came out to allow all the covers to be inspected. Day was allowed to work on his car during the red flag period, as it was deemed his damage was not his fault. Good call. He came back on track 4 laps down. With three to go in Stage 1, Day was penalized for speeding on pit road. The hits just keep on coming. Austin Hill, who had been bouncing off the walls, took the Stage 1 win.
At lap 20 Sammy Smith spun by himself from 3rd but recovered, getting back out in 7th. Sheldon Creed tagged Smith one lap later, but everybody kept going. On lap 23 Lavar Scott rolled to a stop on track for the second race yellow. Taylor Gray won Stage 2 when leader Retzlaff scrubbed the wall on the last lap.
On the restart Day got bumped in Turn 4 by Dean Thompson and spun with a lot of smoke. Yellow. On the restart for that restart, Sam Mayer hit the wall and bounced back, collecting about 20 cars. The retaining walls were even moved quite a bit. Second red flag of the race for cleanup that lasted about 45 minutes. Loved the drunk going up to Sheldon Creed’s car during the red flag and then climbing over two fences to get away. Then he got arrested.
On lap 40 the yellow came back out to allow one of the tire bundles that had been hit to be reset in the chicane. The yellow came back out on lap 51 for debris on the track. The kids played nicely and Austin Hill (aka Harvey Wallbanger) was able to get around Gray for the win with Sheldon Creed 3rd.
But wait, there’s more!! NASCAR Live Timing gave the win to Gray over Carson Kvapil and Retzlaff. Full disclosure – I didn’t see it as my video ran out with two to go, even though I had added time to the regularly scheduled recording. I suspect that a 45-minute red flag may have had something to do with that!!

In the points Justin Allgaier leads – nay, dominates – the points by 224 on Jesse Love and by 238 over Day.
Next race – Sonoma, Saturday at 5.30 P.M. on USA.

NASCAR Craftsman Trucks – Kaden Honeycutt (Toyota) picked up the pole for the race Friday at the San Diego Naval Base. Layne Riggs started second with Chandler Smith third (both in Fords). Jimmie Johnson (Toyota) started 4th, Jamie McMurray started 25th and Brendan Gaughan started 29th. Canadians Stewart Friesen (Toyota) and Cole Butcher (Ford) started 22nd and 25th. 35 starters including 14 Chevs, 9 Fords, 7 Toyotas and 5 RAMs.

Four laps in, the yellow flew after Nathan Nicholson got into Dawson Sutton, who ended up stalled in Turn 13. Riggs picked up the Stage win. On lap 15 Johnson went into the lead!! “And the crowd went wild”!!! Stage 2 went clean and green and Parker Kligerman got the win. On lap 32 the yellow came out for debris on the track.
On lap 46 the yellow came back out, followed by the red flag when Tyler Ankrum nailed the wall and actually moved it while tearing the side off his truck. The green came out with two to go and one lap later another yellow for Nicholson stopped on track. NASCAR Overtime. Riggs took the win over Daniel Hemric and Kaz Grala. Butcher finished 15th, Friesen 33rd, Johnson 30th, McMurray 34th and Gaughan 16th.

In the points Riggs leads Honeycutt by 65 and Smith by 128.
Next race – Lime Rock, Saturday, July 11 at 1 P.M.

Formula One – next race – Austria, Sunday on TSN
IndyCar – Similar to SVG winning the Cup pole at San Diego, it was no surprise to see Alex Palou pick up the pole at the bad-fast Road America for Sunday’s race. David Malukas started 2nd with Marcus Armstrong 3rd. The race went quite smoothly on the very fast and very long track and, at the flag, it was Christian Lundgaard (thanks to the professional spotting by Jeff Gotelaer) over David Malukas and Will Power. I felt sorry for Graham Rahal, who had a top three in sight near the end when he got spun off the track and finished 23rd.

In the points Alex Palou leads Malukas by 60 and Kyle Kirkwood by 314.
Next race – Mid-Ohio, Sunday, July 5.
