Aidan Morris looking to be “even better” for Middlesbrough

Aidan Morris endured one of the toughest moments as a professional footballer in England and is now focused on doing everything he can to not experience those feelings again.

Morris suffered defeat with EFL Championship side Middlesbrough against Hull City in the promotion playoff final back on May 23. The underdog Tigers claimed a 1-0 victory at Wembley Stadium, sealing their spot into the 2026-27 English Premier League season and condemning Middlesbrough to a 10th-consecutive campaign in the second-tier.

Morris was influential in Boro’s run to the final, delivering a stellar season in Kim Hellberg’s squad. However, despite the American midfielder’s best efforts, an inconsistent second-half from Middlesbrough down the stretch clearly played a part in their lack of goals over their three playoff matches.

Middlesbrough will be frustrated with its missed opportunity to get back to the Premier League, but Morris admitted that their finals loss is an important lesson in their growth as a club.

“It’s important to remember these feelings,” said Morris in an interview with the Northern Echo. “Times will get tough. That’s life, and that’s football. It’s never going to be perfect. If you can come back to these moments, remind yourself of how you feel, I don’t think you’ll ever take a shortcut because you want to be on the side of this.”

Morris was one of Middlesbrough’s best players under Hellberg, after originally featuring heavily under Michael Carrick and Rob Edwards in the past. The veteran midfielder made 45 appearances in all competitions, missing just three league matches in the entirety of the campaign.

His durability and versatility played a major role in Middlesbrough’s regular season success, allowing the club to play on the front foot in most of its matches. However, Morris was critical of his overall play in the campaign, despite improving from his first year on Teesside.

Morris already guaranteed improvement in his play for 2026-27, which could play a major role in Middlesbrough’s next promotion push.

“I think I took a step up from last season, but I don’t think that was good enough, if I’m being honest,” Morris said. “Me personally, I’m pretty critical of myself. I hold myself to a high standard. I’ll look to be even better next year.”

Morris and Middlesbrough will begin their new league schedule on the weekend of August 6-8.
