Alex Eala has advanced to the Madrid Open second round after beating former Wimbledon quarter-finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Eala proved too strong for the former world number 11, beating the Russian 6-3, 6-2 in the Spanish capital.
The Filipina was helped to victory – in part – by her opponent, who struck a plethora of unforced errors throughout the contest.

After defeating the Russian on Wednesday afternoon, Eala will play 19th seed Elise Mertens in the second round.
The 20-year-old offered her reaction to beating Pavlyuchenkova, who made her 17th appearance at the Madrid Open.
Colin Fleming says Alex Eala must improve her serve in order to win Grand Slam titles
Fleming, a British former professional tennis player, began his assessment of the contest by reflecting on Pavlyuchenkova’s injury concern.
The Russian requested the physio at 2-3 in the first set.
How would you rate Alex Eala’s first-round win /10?
She beat a former semi-finalist in straight sets!
“Pavlyuchenkova, former semi-finalist at this event, has had some good times here, but not to be today,” Fleming said during Sky Sports’ coverage.’
“Let’s hope the injury isn’t too bad for her as she tries to work her way back up the rankings.
“But impressed with Eala, always great to watch, great attitude, great fight, inspirational player, and through to round two.”
Fleming, a former world number 17, went on to identify a key area of improvement for Eala moving forward.
Discussing the Filipina’s serve, Fleming said: “I think if she wants to go right to the very top, I mean, winning Slams, which I’m sure will be the ultimate goal, she will need to improve that.”

“I feel really great, I love Madrid, it’s an amazing tournament,” Eala said during her post-match interview.
“I’m here almost eight years, so my Spanish gets better, I’m travelling a lot.”
“I think at this level, every match is a battle, all of us players, we fight until the end,” she later added. And she’s been on the Tour many years, so I’m really happy with this win.
“I think she is a great player, so I’m really happy to be in the next round.”
