After coasting along to a win yesterday for an ideal start to their road trip, the Dodgers and Rockies were locked in a closer contest today. Early homers from Kyle Tucker and Dalton Rushing got the Dodgers the lead, but the Rockies manufactured some runs to keep things tense through the middle innings, and eventually took the lead against the Dodgers pen. Meanwhile, the offense just didn’t get going, and when they did get a chance they weren’t able to take advantage in a 4-3 loss.

Things almost started in complete disaster for Ryan Feltner, as Shohei Ohtani started the game by grounding to first and reaching on an error, but Feltner was shaken up trying to snag the toss. Thankfully he was alright and stayed in the game, but he did then immediately give up a homer to Kyle Tucker that made it 2-0.

The Rockies didn’t take long to fight back a bit against Emmet Sheehan, who really didn’t look comfortable in this game at all. Anyway, a one-out double was cashed in by a TJ Rumfield single to make it 2-1 Dodgers.

The Dodgers then got that run back, and it was another homer did damage in the 2nd, as Dalton Rushing stepped up and hit a towering homer to right for his fifth of the year. 3-1.

Again though, the Rockies clawed a run back, as a lead-off single was followed by a stolen base, then a groundout and sac fly cut the Dodger lead to 3-2.

Both pitchers did seem to settle in after all that early back-and-forth.
Sheehan worked around a lead-off walk in the 3rd and a double and walk in the 4th, finally getting a clean frame in the 5th to end his night: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K, 77 Pitches.

As mentioned, the Dodgers offense also managed to let Feltner into a groove. He did have two batters reach in the 3rd, but wiggled out of that and then got clean frames in both the 4th and 5th. He started the 6th as well, getting an out but then giving up a one-out triple to Freddie Freeman (yes, really). The Dodgers couldn’t cash it in, as a diving stop by Kyle Karros saved a run from Teoscar Hernandez to end Feltner’s day, and then Brennan Bernardino entered to strikeout Max Muncy.
Bernardino continued in the 7th and faced the minimum despite hitting Alex Call due to immediately picking him off.

That was a great start for the Rockies pen, but the Dodgers pen couldn’t say the same.
Will Klein entered for him in the 6th and proceeded to give up a double, an infield single that deflected off his foot, and another double from Troy Johnston to score both runners and make it 4-3 Rockies just like that. Klein thankfully at least managed to get out of that without things going full Coors.

The 7th was given to Alex Vesia, who cruised through a 1-2-3 frame that included a strikeout. Edgardo Henriquez followed him with an equally impressive 8th that included a pair of strikeouts.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers were finally able to start something against Jaden Hill in the 8th, as Shohei reached on a catcher’s interference error and Tucker followed with a single. However, Andy Pages struck out, Freddie hit a deep flyball that advanced both runners but was caught, Teoscar walked to load the bases, and Muncy grounded out to get Hill out of the jam.
A lot of waste.
The Rockies then brought in Victor Vodnik for the save in the 9th, and he got the first two outs before giving up an infield single to a pinch-hitting Will Smith and a single to Shohei to extend his on-base streak. However, Tucker flew out to end the game and couldn’t have a moment despite his three-hit game.

15-5, snapping the four-game losing streak.
Tomorrow’s contest is at the early weekend time of 9:10 AM HT/12:10 PM PT/3:10 PM ET almost like it’s a getaway day, but it’s just the third game of four. Sigh. It’ll be Roki Sasaki on the bump in a less than ideal place to get right, and he’ll be facing Michael Lorenzen.
